The 12-year veteran from Ashland came within a shot here, a hole there of earning a PGA Tour card for the 2015 season. In fact, he was in position to realize his goal until the last round in the last PGA event, the Wyndham Championship. But an early quadruple bogey and, generally, less-than-stellar play caused him to come up short. He had another opportunity in the ensuing weeks in the Web.com Tour Finals. But his game didn’t come together as it had much of the year. “I was pretty disappointed when I got home and didn’t accomplish my goal of qualifying for the PGA Tour,” said Allred, who lives in Scottsdale, Ariz. “That said, I’ve had a week and a half to have my emotions settle,” said the 34-year-old. “It’s been a great year way beyond golf. We have a growing family and a lot of things to be thankful for. On the golf course, it was without a doubt the best year of my career. It’s fun to feel like my dreams are stronger and bigger than ever and that I’m enjoying what I’m doing still.” Allred returned to the Rogue Valley this weekend to host a benefit event for Impact Athletics, a Southern Oregon sports ministry. There will be a dinner and auction at 5 p.m. today at Mtn Church, followed at 8 by a free concert featuring Logan Martin at the Lithia Commons amphitheater. Allred needed to finish in the top 25 of the four-tournament Web.com Finals to get a PGA Tour card. But the two times he made the cut, he was tied for 34th and 63rd and ended up well down the list. He has conditional status on the Web.com for 2015, qualifying in the FedExCup Points (151-200) category. He should have no trouble getting into the first four events, at which time the tour will reshuffle player rankings. “If I play well, I’ll be fine for the rest of the year,” said Allred. “If not, it’ll be an uphill battle.” But he won’t wait until the tour begins in mid-February to get back into the swing. Beginning next week, the PGA Tour has tournaments into mid-December, and Allred will attempt to Monday qualify for some of them. First up is the Frys.com Open in Napa, Calif., on Monday. A week later, he’ll try the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas. He expects to try to get into a couple others in November. Allred parlayed Monday qualifying success and a handful of sponsor exemptions into a remarkable season that included two top 10s on the PGA Tour and an invitation to play in Jack Nicklaus’ esteemed tournament, The Memorial, where he tied for 15th. Those events — including co-third in the Northern Trust in Los Angeles in February and co-sixth in the Barracuda in Reno, Nev. — got him within shouting distance of the top 125 on the PGA earnings list, the benchmark he needed to reach to secure a tour card. The showing in Reno in August earned him a spot in the Wyndham. At the season finale, he was tied for 18th place going into Sunday and needed to finish close to that position for the coveted top 125 in money. Allred was 1 under through three holes, then incurred a couple penalties en route to a devastating 8 on the par-4 fourth hole. He tried to rally, making eagle at No. 5 to get two strokes back but was unable to mount a charge. “There was a mix of emotions after being so close to making the PGA Tour a couple different ways,” he said. “It’s disappointing not doing that, but I’ll get up and keep trying.” It’s only human, he said, to wonder, ‘What if?’ “It’s easy to go down that road,” he said, adding that the quadruple bogey is a hole that stands out and that round is “one round I wish I could have over.” “Part of the thing that helped me this year was giving every single shot my best, whether it’s to shoot really low or salvage a bogey or double bogey,” he said. “What else can a guy do?” With the Wyndham behind him, the Web.com Finals loomed. He made the cut in the first tourney, then missed it the next two. “It’s kind of a subtle thing in me,” said Allred, “where I’m trying so hard to do well that I didn’t play with as much freedom. I wasn’t as sharp as I could have been. I certainly prepared with all my heart, but I didn’t play well. I have nobody to blame but myself and didn’t get it done.” Coming to grips with that took some doing, but he got there. His wife and children — including daughter Lucy, who arrived eight days after his third in the Northern Trust — had much to do with it. “I was very disappointed as a competitor and a golfer,” said Allred, “but I’m a very rich man in ways other than golf. I still have lots of opportunities ahead of me.
