Thueson, a lawyer with the Jackson County District Attorney's office, will square off for the City Council seat from Ward 3. Councilor Ellie George decided not to seek re-election in Ward 3. Harrison has served in various capacities around the valley, including on the Rogue Valley Transportation District board. Passionate about urban renewal, water resources, transportation and careful spending, Harrison was elected in 2000 and then was unseated from her "at large" position on the council two years ago. A Harry and David employee, the 61-year-old said she wants to provide some gender balance. "Besides the fact I really enjoy serving my community, I feel like there really needs to be a lady on the council. It's been nice to be on the Planning Commission, but I ... wanted to provide some balance," Harrison said. "I've always been concerned with urban renewal and that it's done in a way that it's helpful and not harmful. We've seen urban renewal projects in this valley take years and years and have a lot of consternation, and then we've seen other projects that were done really well and very thoughtful." Thueson, 33, said he would bring an open mind and willingness to help his community. He said he threw his name in the hat when he learned that George would vacate the seat. A resident since 2010, Thueson is a community volunteer for his church, participates in youth mock trials at Crater High and coaches for Table Rock Soccer. In canvassing his neighborhood to collect signatures to earn a spot on the ballot, Thueson said he heard from residents who wanted to see lower taxes and careful spending. "The main thing that was consistently brought up by different people was that their taxes keep going up and they don't know why," Thueson said. "The other issues I heard about from a lot of people I talked to was the number of foreclosed homes sitting vacant and just not being taken care of. It really drags down the look of our neighborhood. We want to figure out how to get those cleaned up and how also to have a more vibrant downtown that businesses will come into and do well and decide to stay." Thueson said he believes the city is well run and hopes "to be able to contribute something." "When I was in law school, one of my classes was taught by the former Oregon Supreme Court Justice Mick Gillette. He always talked about how becoming an attorney comes with great responsibility," said Thueson. "One of those responsibilities involves being part of your community and getting involved. When there are leadership positions available, you should step up and volunteer." In other council races, incumbent Bruce Dingler will be unopposed for his Ward 1 seat. In Ward 2, Kelly Geiger opted not to seek re-election. Former councilor Mike Quilty, chair of the Metropolitan Planning Organization, who was defeated by Geiger in 2010, will run unopposed.
