FUNDRAISER Boys to Men group looks for donation items Comment By Local report MailTribune.com By Local report Posted Aug. 21, 2015 at 12:01 AM By Local report Posted Aug. 21, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Boys to Men Southern Oregon, a mentoring program for youth in the Rogue Valley, is seeking donations for a sale it will hold later this month to raise money for weekend events. The sale will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 28-29 at the Jefferson Public Radio warehouse at 10th and Front streets in Medford in memory of George Psomas, a longtime mentor for Boys to Men. Psomas passed away from liver cancer in 2014. The warehouse space and a portion of the wares are being provided by Bobbie Sarias, wife of Psomas, who donated what was left from a July estate sale to the nonprofit. Sarias and Psomas staged residences for years, or fitted out homes for sale with furniture for open houses. She decided to quit the business after her husband's death. Boys to Men seeks to mentor boys as they transition into manhood, by providing a support through weekly meetings, fundraisers and occasional weekend retreats. Mike Marshak, resource facilitator for the organization in Southern Oregon, says his grandson developed confidence and a strong sense of self from participating in the program. "He’ll be 21 very shortly, and at this point in time he’s never done a drug, never had a drop of alcohol, he just manages his life for him. He’s become authentic about who he is," says Marshak. Boys to Men is an international organization that was started in 1996 by three San Diego men to reach at-risk young men by matching them with male mentors. Since then, it has spread across the United States, as well as into Canada, Europe and South Africa. Those interested in donating "clean and salable" items can do so by contacting Marshak at 219-669-2259 to arrange item drop-offs at the warehouse until Aug. 25.
