North blanks Klamath Union in tennis A much-anticipated boys tennis No. 1 singles match between North Medford sophomore Tyler Wilson and Reid Arthur of Klamath Union didn't take place Saturday, but nevertheless the Black Tornado continued its undefeated charge through the Southern Oregon Conference. North Medford, which dropped a total of five games in the entire dual, steamrolled Klamath Union 9-0 at District Courts to extend its conference winning streak to 14. Arthur was a no-show because of a college visit to Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash., where the talented Pelican senior has been offered a scholarship. "It's real unfortunate that Reid didn't show up because that would have been the premier match of the season so far," North Medford coach Larry Fields said. The Black Tornado has been untouchable in the conference through the first half of the season. North improved to 5-0 in the SOC after the first round of duals and has defeated its last two opponents by 9-0 margins. North's top four singles players and top four doubles teams have failed to lose a conference match. "Right now we have really good depth," said Fields. "We've dominated most of our matches." In singles, North received an impressive effort from senior Marco Martin in the No. 4 spot. Martin didn't lose a point in the first set against Jeremy Barnes and only lost two points in the second set, with one being on a double fault. "He put his first serves in and he put the ball in the court," said Fields. "That's the rule for winning tennis." Andrew Theen and Mateo Mengis also had a strong performance for North in No. 2 doubles. The pair have played the last two matches together because Theen's normal doubles partner, David Mostue, has had other commitments. "They seem to have jelled really well," said Fields. "They're both left-handed, which gives other team fits." North Medford will try to extend its SOC winning streak at 4 p.m. Tuesday against South Medford at Fichtner-Mainwaring Park. The Black Tornado defeated host Bend in the championship match 6-2. North won its three-team pool with victories over Crook County and Mountain View. Bend defeated Tualatin and Klamath Union to win its pool and advance into the championship against the Black Tornado. North's four doubles teams went undefeated in the tournament. The Black Tornado's top three teams were Annie Chaney and Shannon Leever, April Louie and McKenzie Hilmer and Malissa Witten and Beth Alston. The No. 4 team consisted of Heather Dumas and a JV player from Mountain View. The substitution was necessary because Dumas' regular partner, Jennifer Pendergast, sprained her ankle on Friday.   Track and Field GLIDE INVITATIONAL - At Glide, Cole Parmelee pulled off his usual triple, winning the high jump, long jump and triple jump to pace the North Valley boys to the 14th annual Maynard Mai Invitational title on Saturday. Under a constant drizzle that made for unpleasant conditions, Parmelee cleared 6 feet in the high jump, sailed 20-10 in the long jump and soared 41-111/2 in the triple jump. North Valley finished with 120 points, 36 more than runner-up Oakridge. Travis Wheeler also had a good day for the Knights by winning the discus (150-3) and taking third in the shot put (48-3). Not to be outdone, Jeremiah Lewman and Ken Hiler went 1-2 in the 300-meter hurdles with times of 41.4 and 42.3 seconds, respectively, and Hiler took second in the 100 hurdles. North Valley also won the 4x100 relay in 44.6. St. Mary's Ruben Cotti-Lowell won the javelin with a throw of 152-2 and the Crusaders' 4x400 relay triumphed in 3:39.6. On the girls' side, Rogue River sprinter Rachel Hinze won the 100 (12.7) and 200 (26.8) and Allegra Fety took the 1,500 (5:12.8). Illinois Valley's Jessica Ledford sped to winning times in the 100 hurdles (15.2) and 300 hurdles (48.7). Siuslaw took the team title with 711/2 points as Haley Hunt claimed the shot put (39-53/4) and discus (124-2) and finished second in the javelin (107-7).
