SINCE YOU ASKED Since You Asked: Five-Sunday Februaries a rare occurence Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Feb. 4, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Feb. 4, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Got an email last week reminding me the fifth Sunday of January was coming up. Now, I'm old, gray, negligent as a Wall Street trader, and all that, but I know the NFL, TV executives and every advertising guru had been pointing to Sunday, Feb. 1 for months. So there was no fifth Sunday in January. I'm curious how often we get five Sundays in a month and how often it happens in February? — Vince R., via email Five-Sunday Februaries are only slightly more common — but easier to predict — than pitchers tossing no-hitters in the World Series. The last time there were five Sundays in February was 2004. Before that it was 1976. Seems, as a general rule, every 28 years works, at least for this century. You will see five Sundays in February during 2032, 2060 and 2088. There are generally four months a year with five Sundays; this year it's March, May, August and November. But every five or six years, we get five months with five Sundays. In 2000, it may have slipped right by you, because everyone was worried about Y2K, not how many Sundays a particular month had. The next round was 2006 and then 2012. The next year with five, five-month Sundays is 2017, followed by 2023. Send questions to “Since You Asked,” Mail Tribune Newsroom, P.O.
