Officers responding to a reported assault in the 400 block of Newtown Street shortly after midnight found a man had sustained a severe cut to his hand. Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau said police believe the man's roommate, James Conrad Herron, had swung at him with a machete, and the victim tried to block the blow with his hand. Police said the victim was able to disarm Herron and call 911; he required several stitches on his hand. "There had been ongoing issues (between the two men)," Budreau said. "But nothing that would rise to this type of incident." Herron was initially lodged in the Jackson County Jail on a charge of second-degree assault, but the district attorney's office filed an additional charge of attempted murder. If convicted, he faces a minimum of 70 months in prison on the assault charge and 90 months on the attempted murder charge under Measure 11 sentencing guidelines. "We do believe his intent was to actually kill the victim," Budreau said. Police haven't identified any specific precipitating event that would give Herron a motive to kill his roommate, which Budreau described as "odd." A search of court records shows Herron has no prior felony convictions in Oregon. His bail is set at more than $1 million.
