Greg Walden just signed a budget bill that will double cuts for education, job training, infrastructure, scientific research, medical research, veterans health care and child care. The new budget bill will also cut an additional $495 billion over the next decade. It will also repeal $1 trillion in revenue-raising for the Affordable Care Act, destroying the program. While he is voting on killing these programs, he has no problem throwing money at the Pentagon to the tune of $38 billion more than they asked for. Millions will have no health insurance, college interest rates will increase even higher than the 7.9 percent which they are already at now. Thanks, Greg Walden, tell me again how you are helping us all? Jim Hughes Medford Public pays the cost The proposed Jordan Cove LNG export plant and Pacific Interconnector Pipeline projects present substantial risks to the economic and environmental welfare of Southern Oregon. These have been documented in many columns and letters to the editor, was well as in public hearings. One aspect of these projects, though previously mentioned, that has not been sufficiently emphasized, is that the public is being asked to assume the risks, while private, ou-of-state companies reap the profits. It will be public funds that will end up paying for the cleanup of the “unintended“ consequences of spills, wildfires and climate destabilization. These projects are a small-scale, local example of the larger failure of modern markets to bear the costs, supposedly “external,” of their operation. Ask Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, Gov. Kate Brown and your local legislators to speak out against these specific projects. But more importantly, demand legislators and executives at all levels correct the largest market failure in history, the global geophysical experiment of climate change by fossil fuel overuse, by implementing a revenue-neutral tax on fossil fuels. Robert John Scheelen Medford More crisis beds needed I read with interest the editorial in Sunday's paper, regarding mental illness and the Rogue Valley's shortcomings in dealing with those in crisis. I have direct experience, as we have a close family member who suffers from bipolar disorder, and he had a major manic episode last summer. Being new to this area, I called the hospital in Medford to see about admitting him, only to be told there are only 18 beds (for all ages!) for the entire valley. These beds are always full, as you might imagine. Our family member would most likely, I was told, be shipped off to Portland, Bend or even San Francisco! We were left to deal with a person who was delusional, paranoid and frightening, all on our own. It was a terrifying experience, and I pray that no one has to go through what our family had to endure. We need more room in the psychiatric ward here, and a better way to get people suffering a psychotic break admitted to the hospital, via a dedicated mental health admissions process (not the ER, which can be terrifying for those in crisis).
