Inada will present views of internment ASHLAND � Internment of Japanese Americans during World War II will be the focus of a Jan. 11 presentation at Southern Oregon University. The free presentation will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Meese Auditorium in SOU�s Center for the Visual Arts. Featured speaker is Lawson Inada, author of "Legends from Camp," winner of the 1996 American Book Award for Poetry. Inada, an SOU English professor, was a child when he entered internment camps with his parents and grandparents. They remained in camps for four years. Two 20-minute videos, based on Inada�s experiences, also will be shown. "Lawson Fusao Inada: What It Means to be Free," produced by videographers Vincent Wixon and Michael Markee, was shot in Fresno, Calif., at the Lava Beds National Monument, at the ruins of Tule Lake Relocation Center and in Ashland and Portland. It contains historical footage and photographs from the National Archives and the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles. A second video, "Legends from Camp," is a computer-animated video by Miles Inada, an SOU art professor and son of Lawson Inada. It views internment camp experiences through the eyes of a child. The presentation is part of the 2000-2001 Lecture Programs sponsored by SOU Friends of the Library and co-sponsored by SOU departments of History, English and Art.
