Mustangs settle for split with Salem Jul 12, 2012 12:00 AM A A Hayden Evans stepped up to help right the ship for the Medford Mustangs on Wednesday, but the uprising was short-lived in an American Legion AAA baseball doubleheader at Harry & David Field. Coming off a pair of disappointing losses to Area 4 foe Roseburg on Tuesday, Evans authored a complete-game effort on the mound to lead Medford to a 4-1 win over visiting Salem Post 20 in the opener. With a depleted pitching rotation after a weekend tournament in Reno, Nev., and Tuesday's twin bill, the Mustangs were unable to slow the Dirtbags in the nightcap, which Salem won 16-6 in five innings thanks to 13 hits — including eight for extra bases. In the opener, Evans threw an eight-hitter with seven strikeouts and just one walk. He fanned the side in the top of the seventh inning to finish with a flourish. Billy Hansen was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Ryan Wellock went 2-for-3 with a run scored in support of Evans. Salem scored five runs in the second inning in Game 2 against Jessie Hornbrook, who was making his first pitching appearance of the season, and used that momentum to slip past the Mustangs (18-13). Hornbrook connected for his first home run — a solo shot in the second inning — to highlight the nightcap for Medford, with Hansen going 1-for-2 with three RBIs in the nonleague game.
