Medford's airport director is trying to get permission from the city to sell advertising signs on the four sides of the airport's control tower Branding the 100-foot tall control tower at the Medford airport with a company logo would be a money maker for the Jackson County-owned facility. But first it has to get past some dubious city officials. MailTribune.com Writer Posted Oct. 5, 2011 @ 12:01 am Posted Oct. 5, 2011 @ 12:01 am »  Social News Branding the 100-foot tall control tower at the Medford airport with a company logo would be a money maker for the Jackson County-owned facility. But first it has to get past some dubious city officials. "Most people just get this funny look on their face and say it doesn't make sense to me," said Dave McFadden, a Medford Planning Commission member. Bern Case, director of the Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport, said he is negotiating with a company interested in placing signs on all four sides of the tower, similar to the kind of corporate branding at the U.S. Cellular Community Park. Case wouldn't disclose the company name or the amount of money the airport would receive in compensation. The details of the deal would be public record if it's completed. Case presented his proposal to the city Planning Commission in September in advance of a public hearing scheduled for 5:30 p.m, Oct. 13, at the Medford City Hall Council Chambers, 411 W. Eighth St. The proposed signs would exceed city standards because the calculations base the allowable sign size on the horizontal dimensions of the building. That severely limits the options on the very vertical tower. Case has asked the city to amend the sign code to allow 675 square feet of sign on each side of the building. The tower is 34 feet wide on each side, and Case said he expected the company logo would be roughly 25 feet by 25 feet on each side. The type of advertising on the tower hasn't been completely worked out yet, Case said. He said the illumination could either be direct or indirect. "I think it's going to be kind of subtle," he said. "We haven't decided on the lighting." He said the branding will be similar to that seen at Medford's U.S. Cellular Community Park. The sports park signs do not carry overt advertising messages, but the cellphone company's name is prominently displayed. After discussions with the Federal Aviation Administration, Case said the feds' main concern with any advertisement is that the lighting doesn't hinder the visibility for air traffic controllers. Case said he hasn't heard of any other airport that has placed advertising on its control tower. "At airport conferences, everybody is talking about it, but we might be leading the way," he said. The Medford Planning Department will work on language for a sign code amendment to deal with the airport proposal. Planning Director Jim Huber said one of the main considerations he will have in drafting an amendment to the code is how the sign will be lit. "It could either be backlit, externally lit or not lit at all," he said. The code could specifically exclude certain types of signs, he said. Planning commission members recently expressed concern about the type of signs on the tower at their Sept. 25 meeting. Commission Chairman Norm Nelson said he didn't think it would be appropriate to have electronic signs on the tower. Other commission members expressed concern about the image the signs would create for visitors to the city. Commissioners also questioned whether it would be appropriate to provide an exception to the sign ordinance for a government agency, when it would be difficult for a private citizen to get the same exception. McFadden said. "You would have a government building competing for advertising dollars with the private sector." He said he had other concerns about changing the sign ordinance. "I just think in today's age, people get tired of being constantly bombarded with advertising," McFadden said. Reach reporter Damian Mann at 541-776-4476, or e-mail [email protected].
