Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend October 2, 2005 Stoutenburgh holds off Klotz in a run for the ages Crater High standout wins Jim Danner Invitational by mere inches GRESHAM — There’s usually at least a little separation between the runners of a high school cross country race. But race officials at the Jim Danner Invitational needed a photo finish to determine that Crater’s Isaac Stoutenburgh had edged out Central Catholic star Kenny Klotz by mere inches. In a race for the ages at Gresham’s Blue Lake Park, Stoutenburgh held off a hard-charging Klotz and Jeff Helmer from Jackson High School in Seattle, Wash. Stoutenburgh ran a personal record by 10 seconds — clocking 15:03.02 — while Klotz was timed in 15:03.31 and Helmer in 15:04.6. Stoutenburgh charged into the lead with about a half-mile to go and built a 10-meter advantage, but Klotz — the defending Class 4A state champion — fought back. It was a mad dash to the finish shoot and no one knew who won for nearly 20 minutes. Stoutenburgh set course and school records with his efforts. Advertisement "This is probably Isaac’s biggest win ever," said Crater coach Justin Loftus. "This race is tougher than the state meet because there’s guys from six different states competing. The field was loaded." Stoutenburgh hadn’t beaten Klotz since last year’s Danner Invitational. "From a psychological standout, beating Klotz was big," said Loftus. "This sets a precedent." Klotz and Helmer, the Washington state track champion in the 3,000 meters last spring, are both known as big kickers, but Stoutenburgh took some starch out of them by shifting into overdrive with a half-mile remaining in the race. Helmer came back and drew even with Stoutenburgh with about 200 meters to go and then faded. Klotz then made his move but couldn’t quite catch the Crater standout. "Everyone up here was really jazzed about this race," Loftus said. "These three kids are Division I recruits and they went at it. It was a lot of fun, especially for Issac." Crater’s other big gun — Jake Keyser — finished eighth in a lifetime best of 15:41.03. Central Catholic won the boys Division I team title with 88 points. Boise, Idaho finished second with 99 points and was Liberty, Mo., third with 142. Crater was 17th out of 23 teams with 378 points. In the girls Division I race, Ashland’s Natalie Hemphill ran a 29-second PR to take seventh. Her time was 18:22.07. "Natalie was only seven seconds off the first Oregon finisher (third place Shelby Brennan of Aloha) and third overall among the Oregon runners," said Ashland coach Robert Julian. "That makes her a state contender." Boise won the girls Division I team title with 129 points. Jesuit was second with 161. Ashland’s boys fared nicely in Division II, claiming fifth place as a team and taking home a trophy. Spencer Bonney was 33rd individually in 16:49.27, Matt Miner was 35th (16:54.84), Cameron Barleen 37th (16:54.84) and Dennis McCaffrey 39th (16:58.62) out of 168 finishers. "Barleen was running really strong but he got a cramp and was almost walking at the end," Julian said. "But our boys did great. They’re starting to come around." In Division II girls, Crater’s Kristin Haga finished 25th in 20:10.68, Riley Swanson took 28th in 20:14.93, Laurie Stoutenburgh placed 37th in 20:28.29 and Kayleigh Tyerman was 42nd in 20:40.23. As a team, Crater was seventh. St. Mary’s Mike Seus ran tough in Division III boys, taking 10th in a time of 17:05.22. In the girls Division III event, St. Mary’s Lindsay Gasik placed 15th in a time of 20:19.62.
