According to a Medford Police Department news release, Matthew James Martin is still listed in critical condition at Rogue Regional Medical Center after being struck by a pickup while crossing Barnett Road at the I-5 overpass around 11:30 p.m. Friday. Police say witnesses followed the pickup, a grey 2014 Toyota Tundra, to the parking lot of the Chevron gas station on East Barnett Road. The pickup was registered out of California, and police found out it was associated with a man staying at the Best Western Horizon Inn on Barnett. The man, Ronald Steven Cook of Ukiah, was arrested at about 6 a.m. when officers conducting surveillance spotted him walking back to the hotel. Police, who say Cook was under the influence of a controlled substance, got a search warrant for a urine sample. Investigators they believe he had been hiding in nearby brush for several hours before he was caught, the news release said. Police arrested Cook on charges of second-degree assault, felony hit-and-run and driving under the influence of a controlled substance. Second-degree assault is a Measure 11 crime carrying a minimum sentence of 70 months in prison upon conviction. Cook is being held in the Jackson County Jail on more than $1 million bail.
