Suspicious car fire investigated The Jackson County Sheriff�s Department wants to know whether a torched, 1991 Geo Storm was set ablaze by vandals or by its owner. According to Deputy Greg Halley, the sheriff�s department responded to a report of an explosion in White City around 6:20 p.m. Friday. When deputies arrived at Hoover Ponds near Kershaw Road and Highway 140, they discovered the Geo, completely engulfed by flames. "It looks like somebody stripped the car, and removed the tires before setting it on fire," Halley said. Fire District 3 responded with two units, and the fire was under control in less than 30 minutes, a spokesman said. The vehicle was registered out of California, Halley said, but attempts to contact the owner have been unsuccessful. The investigation is ongoing, and Halley said the sheriff�s department is looking at several possibilities. The car may have been abandoned and set on fire by the owner, he said. If that�s the case, Halley adds, then if the owner may be charged with offensive littering.
