The fire erupted about 5:30 a.m., and four engines responded to the scene, including an engine from Jacksonville. “Crews were able to attack the fire outside and knock it down,” Goodson said. “There was extensive damage to the house.” No injuries were reported. Dennis Kelly, a spokesman for the American Red Cross, said his organization has found a hotel for two adults and two children who were displaced by the fire. A case worker will be assigned on Monday to determine if more long-term assistance is needed for the family, he said. Goodson said the fire appeared to be accidental, but the cause was still under investigation. He didn't have an estimate of the damages and wasn't sure if the house could be rebuilt or would need to be torn down. Fire crews had to pull down lathe and plaster ceilings to make sure the fire didn’t spread into the attic, he said. Based on the fire department’s assessment, the house cannot be occupied, Goodson said. Once the fire crews leave, the house is turned back over to the owners, who may attempt to retrieve their belongings, Goodson said. The Medford Building Department will inspect the house at a later date to determine how safe it is, he said. Reach reporter Damian Mann at 541-776-4476 or [email protected].
