Ashland blows past Knights ASHLAND - Young guns and a stout defense were the story as Ashland routed North Valley 5-1 in a non-conference soccer game Thursday. Freshman Silvia VanAussell and sophomore Danya Rose-Merkle each scored two goals to lead the Grizzly offensive attack. "They are both very young and both extremely technical and talented," said Ashland coach Iman Siadat. "I am very fortunate to have such talented players on my team." With a slim 1-0 halftime lead, the Grizzlies (2-0-1) began the second half aggressively on both sides of the ball. "In the second half, we really came out and attacked on offense, and our defense shut them down completely," said Siadat. Senior goalie Stephanie Hargis, who was making her first start of the season due to mouth surgery, made six saves on the day. Sophomore Kim Thompson was a defensive stalwart for the Grizzlies. "In the second half, she (Thompson) kept the defense together as a sweeper," said Siadat. Thompson and Rose-Merkle started as freshmen on last year's squad. The Grizzly defense limited North Valley to eight shots on goal. Junior Angela Hiene scored the fifth goal for the Grizzlies, and junior Kelly Thompson notched two assists. CRATER 7, HIDDEN VALLEY 5 - At Murphy, sophomore Sarah Lafontaine exploded for five goals to lead Crater to a win in a non-conference shootout. Lafontaine helped rally the Comets from a 3-1 halftime deficit with the game-tying goal, and Katie Doshier put Crater ahead in the 49th minute. Hidden Valley rallied to tie at 5-5, but Lafontaine added the final two goals for the win. Jessica Lafontaine, Sarah's sister, also added a goal for the Comets (2-1). Alex Ford led the Mustangs with two goals. ROSEBURG 1, THURSTON 1 - At Roseburg, freshman Carli Godard scored in the 65th minute to tie the game and subsequently end the non-conference match in a deadlock. Tara Overton gave Thurston the lead early in the game with a goal in the seventh minute. Junior Amanda Stribling of the Indians (2-1-1) assisted on Godard's tying goal.
