Manzanita and all small growth have been taken off the hillside, leaving only scrub oak trees. Is this for fire protection? —Anita J., Medford Indeed, Anita, the city has been taking steps to protect the peak from fire. In 2002, the city got a $65,000 grant from the Oregon Department of Forestry for fuel reduction at Prescott Park. The money was for clearing along park roadways, said Bev Power, a customer service specialist with the city’s parks department. Clearing brush from near roads can limit the chance for roadside fires sparked from vehicles and eases the way for big fire trucks should they be needed up the road. Power said the clearing is about three-quarters done and will resume this fall. A Job Council crew of teenagers gaining work experience cleared some hiking trails in the park this summer.
