Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend January 7, 2006 Pina arraigned on attempted murder, other charges A Medford teen shot by a police officer Dec. 26 after the youth allegedly attacked his neighbor with a knife was arraigned Friday in Jackson County Circuit Court on charges of attempted murder, burglary and assault. Following his court appearance, Justin Miles Pina, 17, was lodged in the Jackson County Jail, where he remained late Friday on $2 million bail. First-degree assault and attempted murder both carry mandatory minimum prison sentences of seven and a half years. Medford police officer John Torgerson shot Pina after responding to an early-morning 9-1-1 call in the 700 block of Gilman Road. Upon arriving at the residence, Torgerson found Pina standing over neighbor Helen Marie Brown with a knife in his hand. Pina refused the officer’s order to drop the knife and approached Torgerson, who shot him once in the abdomen. Torgerson will remain on administrative leave until Thursday, when a grand jury will decide whether the shooting was justified. Police were called to the Pina home twice before the attack because the teen was allegedly acting strangely and threatening his father. Police reports indicate officers tried to find help for Pina, but decided he had done nothing to warrant arrest and did not appear to have a medical condition that warranted hospitalization. Brown suffered head injuries and stab wounds after Pina reportedly barged into her home and attacked her at around 7:50 a.m. She underwent surgery at Rogue Valley Medical Center and was discharged days later. Pina was treated for the gunshot wound at Rogue Valley Medical Center. Detectives arrested Pina Thursday after he was discharged from the hospital.
