Here's what authorities know: • Her remains — just a skeleton, except for hair and scalp — were found Aug. 19, 1971, in an area described as a dump, near a side road going to what was then listed as the Cooke ranch, just south of Rough and Ready Creek and east of the Redwood Highway. • Her date of death was estimated to be sometime in 1971. • She weighed an estimated 125 pounds and was believed to be 14 to 25 years old when she died. She was 5-foot-4. Her hair was red/auburn, with dyed blond streaks. • Annie wore a checkered pink and beige waist-length coat, a tan long-sleeved turtleneck shirt and jeans, size 13-14 misses slim. • Her shoes were "Primstyle" brand, brown and squared-toed, with heavy heels, wide straps and gold-colored buckles. • An ornate ring found with the body had a mother-of-pearl face that was strangely scratched with the letters "AL" across its face. • No blood was found on Annie's clothing, and no purse was found. She had 38 cents with her. » Social News The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children has released a newly created image of a young woman whose remains were found 45 years ago in the woods near Cave Junction. The identity of the young person, who might have been anywhere from 14 to 25 years old when she died, is unknown. It is hoped the new image will prompt someone to recognize her. For the time being, she is known as Jane "Annie" Doe, or just Annie, whose remains were found in 1971 by a father and his son off the Redwood Highway north of O'Brien, near Waldo Road. She was found fully clothed, wearing unusual jewelry and carrying a map of Northern California campgrounds in her pocket. The cause of her death is unknown, but suspicious. The case was investigated by the Josephine County Sheriff's Office. Deputy Kari Lee, the department's current evidence specialist, has made Annie's case a cause. "I want this case solved, exclamation point," Lee said in an interview two years ago. "I want to give her family closure." On Friday, Lee referred questions about the case to a supervisor, but he was out of the office and did not return messages for comment. The center last Tuesday released the image and a three-minute video about the case, using old photos and newspapers to tell the story, with comments from Ashley Rodriguez, a forensic case specialist with the center. The case of Annie is one of more than 700 unsolved missing children's cases handled by the center, and it's one of the oldest, Rodriguez says in the video. "Forty-five years is way too long," she says. "There is a lot to work with in Annie's case. She has a lot of unique clothing, a lot of unique jewelry. I think there's still people out there who are missing her." One of the biggest clues is the new image, created over the last few months by artists at the center with the help of a forensic anthropologist. Annie's skull was used to create the computer-generated image. "We are asking people to really look at this image," Rodriguez says. "See if you recognize her. For 45 years, family and friends (somewhere) have been wondering what happened to her. I think we owe it to Annie and her family to help them find some answers."
