Eagle Point routs Roseburg EAGLE POINT A Southern Oregon Conference dual wrestling match that had the makings of a battle instead was rendered a rout when Eagle Point notched an impressive early win, then didnt let up. The Eagles, sparked by a stirring rally by Andrew Larsen, routed Roseburg 54-6 Thursday. Larsen, a sophomore competing at 119 pounds against defending district champion John Peckham, trailed 5-1 entering the third and final period before roaring to a 9-5 triumph. "Going into the dual, we figured itd be pretty close," said Eagles assistant coach Rob Cowden, "because Roseburgs got a pretty solid varsity lineup. But we picked up some pretty big wins from some guys, and not just wins but major decisions and falls, where we werent expecting to." Larsen may have been the springboard. Trailing 5-1 in the third, he got an escape when Peckham cut him loose, then recorded a takedown and two-point near fall to go ahead 6-5. Larsen put Peckham on his back for a three-point near fall to close out the scoring. John Gallo of Eagle Point posted an important triumph at 140 when he emerged from a close match and pinned Joe Oiler in 3:40. Also, the Eagles Tyson Nelson, another sophomore, turned in a dominating performance against state-placer Levi Thomas at 160 pounds, winning 12-6. Thomas placed fourth at the state tournament last year. "Its nice to see some of the guys coming on at the end of the year and peaking as we get close to the district meet," said Cowden. The SOC district tournament is Feb. 9-10 at South Medford High. Eagle Point also got pin from Chet McBee at 145, Darek Smith at 152, Jake Phillips at 189 and Randy Stepp at 215. James Mannenbach added a technical fall at 171. TEAM SCORES Eagle Point 54, Roseburg 6 103 Justin Sheile, EP, dec. Kevin Beavers, 10-4; 112 Joe Lewis, EP, dec.
