Rain expected over the next week Sunday Feb 5, 2017 at 7:32 PM Greg Stiles Mail Tribune @GregMTBusiness Coming off the wettest January in 11 years, the Medford area can expect to see a regular dose of rain for the next week. The 4.89 inches of precipitation was 2.46 inches above the normal reading. It also pushed the water year — beginning Oct. 1 — total to 16.58 inches, 6.51 inches above normal. It was the wettest January here since 2006, when 5.12 inches of precipitation accumulated. Southwestern Oregon's higher elevations also saw gusts of 71 mph at Onion Mountain Lookout early Sunday afternoon, peak gusts of 65 mph at Flynn Prairie in Curry County and 66 mph at Squaw Peak in Jackson County. "It was blowing pretty good at Mount Ashland," said Jay Stockton with the National Weather Service In Medford. "When the winds between 3,000 feet and 4,000 feet line up we see it. When they don't line up, then we don't get much of anything." Around Ashland gusts topped out at 41 mph and 35 mph at the Medford airport. The strong winds ushered in a system that is expected to add another inch of rain between now and Thursday night. "It's going to be a wet week, with persistent rain," he said. "But it won't be real heavy."
