Light One Candle Mom and baby need a bed EDITOR'S NOTE : "Light One Candle" is an annual Mail Tribune feature that focuses on a single need of a person, family or agency during the holiday season. For information, call 776-4465 or e-mail [email protected] Until a week ago, the 19-year-old Medford woman didn't have a home for herself or her 6-month-old baby boy. She's got a roof over her head now, thanks to the efforts of the folks at the Healthy Start program run by the Jackson County Health Department. But that's about it. The young woman, who was abandoned as a child herself, became homeless after fleeing an abusive relationship. For the past week, she has been sleeping with her baby on the floor of her empty apartment. More than anything, what this young woman needs is a bed, says Peg Bowden, program director. "If anyone had a double bed or a queen bed and bedding, that would be wonderful," Bowden says. "She doesn't have any sheets or blankets either." A donation of a good new or used mattress and box springs would make a significant difference to this small family. Sheets, blankets and pillows would also be appreciated. To arrange a donation, call Bowden at 774-8042. Any extra beds and bedding will be distributed to other families in similar situations.
