Suspect in carjackings arrested in California Police in California arrested a man Wednesday in connection with carjackings in Northern California and Southern Oregon. Walter Howard White, 28, a transient, was arrested by the California Highway Patrol in Bakersfield, Calif., according to the Josephine County Sheriff's Office. Police in Bakersfield recovered a white Chevy Luv pickup that was stolen Tuesday from Charles R. Bruce, 79, of Cave Junction. White admitted involvement in the Northern California and Oregon cases, police said. Police are still investigating; there may be warrants from Oklahoma. The first carjacking happened Monday evening, when environmental activist Lou Gold picked up a man hitchhiking near Crescent City, Calif., and gave him a ride to Cave Junction. Near Cave Junction, the man asked Gold to pull over and pulled a handgun on him. "He said, `It's real. It's loaded. I'm a fugitive. I killed my girlfriend in a rage. If you want to get out of this alive, do exactly as I say,"' Gold said. The gunman led Gold 150 feet off the road and then drove off in Gold's camper. "This was the only time I was worried, because I didn't know if he was going to pop me from behind," Gold said. Later, Gold's camper was found abandoned and reports of the gunman led to a search around the Greyback Campground, which turned up nothing. Then on Tuesday, Bruce gave the man a ride to Grants Pass. There the man took over the car at gunpoint and forced Bruce out near Gold Hill. Deputies said the man told some people he was trying to get to Klamath Falls.
