FOURTH OF JULY FIRE Cause of July 4 fire on Sterling Creek undetermined Fireworks not suspected, investigators say Comment By Cathy Noah MailTribune.com By Cathy Noah Posted Jul. 13, 2016 at 4:24 PM By Cathy Noah Posted Jul. 13, 2016 at 4:24 PM » Social News Applegate Fire District investigators say they can't determine the cause of a blaze that burned hot and fast through a 900-square-foot building at 81 Sterling Creek Road, Jacksonville, the night of July 4. The fire caused extensive damage to the garage part of the structure, a 120-year-old barn to which living quarters had been added over the years, said Fire Chief Mike McLaughlin. It also caused heat and smoke damage in the rest of the building. No one was living permanently at the home and no one was there when the fire started, McLaughlin said. A renter who lives in a double-wide mobile home behind the property was unhurt and her home untouched by the flames, according to the property owner, John Henderson of Jacksonville. McLaughlin said that although neighbors reported hearing fireworks before seeing the flames, investigators did not find remnants of fireworks during their investigation. The fire exploded several aerosol cans, which can sound like fireworks, particularly on the Fourth of July, he said. McLaughlin said investigators believe the fire started outside the structure. "Due to the accumulation of combustible material and amount of heat generated, if was difficult to determine the cause," McLaughlin said. A damage estimate was not immediately available. Engines from Jacksonville and Applegate fire districts and Oregon Department of Forestry knocked the blaze down within 15 minutes after arriving, according to Applegate Fire Capt. TaiLese Goodnough.
