Souths tough road continues CORVALLIS South Medford first-year girls soccer coach Buzz Thielemann is not worrying about wins in the non-conference part of his schedule. Thielemanns Panthers lost for the third time in four outings when Corvallis pinned a 4-2 loss on South Saturday. "Im a new coach and Ive given them a new offense and defense," said Thielemann. "What I saw today was a huge increase in the overall performance." After Erica Porter bent in a corner kick to give Corvallis a 1-0 lead a little over two minutes into the contest, South answered with a pair of goals to surge ahead. Senior Emily Perttu, who missed all of last season due to a knee injury, tied the score for South with an unassisted goal from 20 yards away at 7:53. Then junior forward Lyndsey Hawk put the Panthers ahead at the 20-minute mark on a shot from 15 yards. Hawk is a first-year varsity player Thielemann has moved over from defense with good results. "Her aggression on the ball is terrific," said Thielemann. Corvallis sent the game into halftime tied when Kelly Cronkrite scored late in the period. It took control with goals at the sixth and 26th minutes of the second half. CRATER 5, MARSHFIELD 0 At Marshfield, Sarah LaFontaine, a freshman center midfielder, recorder her second hat trick in as many matches as the Comets improved to 3-1 in non-conference play. LaFontaine scored at the seventh and 24th minutes of the first half to give Crater a 2-0 lead at the break. Goals by Kassidy Reina on a LaFontaine assist and Katie Doshier preceded LaFontaines second-half goal. LaFontaine has eight goals on the year, and Reina, also a freshman, has seven. Assists for the Comets, who outshot the Pirates 27-1, went to Becki Doshier, Ashley Richmond and Linsy Johnson. SOUTH EUGENE 2, NORTH MEDFORD 1 At Eugene, Julie Elvon gave North a 1-0 lead 14 minutes into the contest with a 30-yard shot into the top of the net, but the Black Tornado (0-2-1) couldnt hold the lead. Melissa Purvis and Meira Dinsmore countered for the Axemen. MOUNTAIN VIEW 2, ASHLAND 1 At Bend, Mountain View scored twice in the final 18 minutes to down the Grizzlies in the non-conference match. Ashland scored first when Hanna Seltzer tallied an unassisted goal 14 minutes into the second half. The Cougars scored at the 22- and 30-minute marks for the win. Ashland is 1-1. ROSEBURG 7, SPRINGFIELD 0 At Springfield, Rachel Stribling continued her hot early-season play with four goals in the Indians non-conference win. PHOENIX 3, SOUTH UMPQUA 3 At Tri City, the Phoenix Pirates scored three goals in the final 15 minutes to avoid their first loss of the season. Freshman goalie Kat Cox, sidelined in the first half by a shoulder injury, returned as a forward with 20 minutes to play and sparked the Pirates to the tie. Coxs second shot of the day was knocked away, but her second shot to the near post went in. Three minutes later, Coxs shot was deflected, but Kelly Singleton found the net on the rebound. The Pirates pulled even with 90 second splay when Larissa Trout came in from the left side to wrest the ball away from a crowd and bury it in the goal Phoenix had two corner kicks in the remaining moments, but couldnt convert.
