Tornado rolls past Ashland ASHLAND � The volleyball machine known as the North Medford Black Tornado churned to another impressive victory on Tuesday night. In a gym where it normally has to fight for every point and sideout, the Tornado tamed defending Southern Oregon Conference champion Ashland 15-3, 15-10. Middles Kendra Mitchell and Chaley Higgins and right side Candace Fleener put up a strong block and North Medford played good defense in the back line as well to stymie the Grizzlies and run its SOC record to 4-0. "We had some rocky points near the end of the second game but overall we were very consistent," North Medford coach Ron Beick said. "In the first game we continually sided out and then scored a point or two with our serve. It was pretty methodical "Kendra, Chaley and Candace put up a good block and forced Ashland into some hitting errors." Fleener, who ended the first game with an ace, finished with seven kills to lead the Tornado attack. Jill Carrigan added five kills while Higgins and Beth Beth Rathburn had four each. In the second game, North Medford�s Kara Hwang served the first five points and the Tornado went on to leads of 8-1 and 13-3 before Ashland staged a late rally. With the loss, Ashland fell to 1-3 in the SOC. GRANTS PASS 15-15, KLAMATH UNION 13-13 � At Grants Pass, setter Ashley Bellum served home the final point as Grants Pass upset Klamath Union. Grants Pass led 14-5 in the second game before the Pelicans rallied behind senior middle Kaylene Munson, who had 20 kills on the night. Klamath inched to within 14-13 but could get no closer. Senior outside hitter Johnna Nealy, senior middle Casey Higgins and junior defensive specialist Stephanie Franklin paced the Cavers, who improved their SOC record to 1-3. SOUTH MEDFORD 16-15, EAGLE POINT 14-7 � Slow-starting South Medford overcame an 11-4 deficit in the first game and a 6-0 deficit in the game second to rally past upset-minded Eagle Point. The Panthers, now 2-2 in the SOC, awoke from their slumber in the first game when Megan Barry went to the service line and rattled off nine straight. A short time later, Crystal Glover put away a kill for the game-winner. Senior middle Kellie Thomas had a big match for South with 10 kills, while Carrie Doren, the Panthers� other middle, added five. Jamie Williams was a spark for Eagle Point (0-4) in the first game when she served seven straight. Kara Stuart led the Eagles at the net with nine kills. ROSEBURG 15-15, CRATER 0-9 � At Central Point, Katie Kahn served the first 14 points in the first game, including four aces, as the Indians remained perfect in SOC play. Megan Morley downed nine kills for Roseburg, while Kristen Bitter had five stuff blocks.
