Irish turn back Black Tornado Saturday Oct 8, 2016 at 8:20 PM Oct 8, 2016 at 8:20 PM EUGENE — North Medford struck first but couldn’t keep the momentum going as Sheldon scored a pair of unanswered goals to secure a 2-1 victory in Southwest Conference boys soccer Saturday. The Black Tornado went up 1-0 in the fifth minute on a ball crossed by Jason Cruz from 18-yards out that was pounded home on a header by Heriberto Gallegos. Sheldon, however, answered with two goals of its own to build a 2-1 halftime lead the Irish was able to protect over the final 40 minutes for the SWC win. Sheldon’s eventual game-winner came in the 35th minute off a penalty kick by Oliver Opdahl. Kendall James recorded four saves for the Black Tornado (4-5-1 overall, 3-4-1 SWC). North Medford was outshot only 10-9 by Sheldon (7-3-1, 5-3). SOUTH MEDFORD 3, ROSEBURG 0: South Medford senior Pablo Gonzalez scored twice and Jesus Estrada worked a nice give-and-go with Hersson Guitron for another as the Panthers secured their second straight SWC victory. Gonzalez scored in the 17th minute on a header off a Jonah Michael cross, then tallied unassisted in the 65th minute. Max Listro and Ruben Rodriguez combined on the shutout in goal for South (2-8-1, 2-6-1 SWC). GRANTS PASS 3, SOUTH EUGENE 2: At Grants Pass, Connor Cubic’s penalty kick goal proved to be the difference as Grants Pass opened a 3-0 lead before having to withstand South Eugene’s rally in the final 25 minutes of the SWC match. Kenny Burton scored on an assist by Enrique Gonzalez in the 12th minute for the lone first-half goal, then Grants Pass (6-5, 5-4 SWC) saw Gonzalez score on a header off a Cubic corner kick before Burton was taken down in the box to set up the PK in the 55th minute. Jesus Velazco and Evan Slye scored in the 56th and 62nd minutes for the Axemen (7-3, 7-1). SPRINGFIELD 2, ASHLAND 1: At Ashland, Springfield scored two goals early in the first half to secure a Midwestern League win. Ashland’s Ben Lucero scored from 12 yards out on an assist by Ian Rinefort in the 65th minute. The Grizzlies fell to 7-2-1 overall, 1-2-1 in MWL, and the Millers improve to 8-2-1 and 4-0. THURSTON 7, EAGLE POINT 0: At Eagle Point, Thurston opened a 3-0 lead by halftime and carried that momentum into a dominant second half to secure the Midwestern League victory over host Eagle Point (4-6, 1-2 MWL). CASCADE CHRISTIAN 5, ROGUE RIVER 1: Cascade Christian sophomore Ethan Hoffman scored three goals in three minutes to open the second half and the Challengers controlled play in the District 5 clash at U.S. Cellular. Ben McDonald scored off a Sam Preszler assist two minutes into the match and Ryan Vidlak’s goal on an assist by Jesse Fretz gave Cascade Christian (7-2-1, 6-1-1 Dist. 5) a 2-0 halftime edge. Hoffman then scored in the 42nd, 43rd and 44th minutes, with assists going to Vidlak and McDonald. Gavin Decker scored for Rogue RIver (9-2, 7-2) with two minutes remaining. ST. MARY’S 1, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0: At Cave Junction, St. Mary’s received a forfeit after Illinois Valley was unable to field enough players for the District 5 match. The Crusaders moved to 10-2 overall and 8-1 in league play, while Illinois Valley dropped to 2-8-1 and 2-6-1.
