VOTE FOR STARTERS : Go to mailtribune.com/allstars » Social News All-star basketball games are generally about scoring a lot of points. And that fits right into Adrienne Wood's mindset. The Eagle Point senior has been a long-distance carrier her entire career, knocking down 3-pointers at a record-breaking rate, and she'll get one more chance to do so as a high school player in the Mail Tribune All-Star Basketball Classic Friday at Kids Unlimited. The ninth-annual event brings together top boy and girl players in the region from 16 schools, classes 6A to 1A. The girls game is at 6 p.m., and the boys start at 7:30. Tickets for the doubleheader are $8 for adults and $4 for students. Kids 12 and under get in free. Both games will be webcast live on www.tablerocksports.net . Proceeds go to Kids Unlimited, a Medford youth development agency at 821 N. Riverside. Starters for the game will be determined by online fan voting. To participate, go to mailtribune.com/allstars . Balloting closes at noon Friday. As of Wednesday afternoon, more than 1,500 ballots had been submitted. The teams, the Rogues and the Siskiyous, are guided by coaches from Southern Oregon, Oregon Tech and College of the Siskiyous. Wood, a 5-foot-3 guard who plans to continue playing in college but hasn't decided where, will be making her third All-Star appearance and looks forward to meeting others from area schools. She is a member of the Rogues team. “It's great to play against the other girls in the valley,” said Wood. “It's super competitive because you're playing against all the best players. You can do more things. It's fun to be out there and playing some real competitive basketball.” She doesn't know “a bunch of the girls, but I'm excited to meet them and see how they play.” Wood figures offense will be plentiful, and that’s something she knows a little about. Wood owns a half-dozen Eagles scoring records, including the single-game mark of nine 3-pointers set this year against Marist. She scored 34 points in that contest and had a record 35-point outing against Ridgeview. Wood played for the Siskiyous the past two years, and her teams won both games, 66-64 a year ago and 73-69 in 2014. By comparison, her Eagles teams the past two years scored as many as 66 points once. “That's expected,” Wood said of the points generated in an all-star game. “A lot of these girls can score and create stuff.” That's not to say defense takes the day off. “When it comes down to winning and losing, both teams want to win and both will play defense,” she said. “In the end, defense will probably win it. No one wants to lose that game.” Brian Schireman, a North Medford senior, concurs. He played on the Rogues team that lost 94-91 last year. “It was pretty fast-paced,” said Schireman, a member of the Siskiyous this year. “I was expecting us not to play much defense, that it would be more relaxed and slower-paced. But it got pretty intense. That surprised me, but it made it a little more fun.” Although the teams are selected with the intention of making them even, the Siskiyous have managed to build winning streaks in both the boys and girls series. The Siskiyou boys have won six straight after losing the first two years. The Siskiyou girls' victory streak is at four games. The Rogues won the first four contests. The winning boys team has scored at least 80 points — and often quite a bit more — in all but two games. The team record is 102 points in 2012 by the Siskiyous, followed by their 99 in 2010. The most points scored by a girls team was 76 in 2011 by the Rogues. Schireman looks forward to a loose, fun game that should be enjoyable to fans. He also likes that it's at Kids Unlimited and benefits the facility. “To me, it does” mean something, he said, in response to a question about funds raised. The All-Star event has raised more than $40,000 over the years. “Me and a couple other kids grew up playing all the time at Kids Unlimited and doing stuff there,” he said. “As a senior, it'll be cool playing my last game in the gym where I probably practiced the most amount of time.” Both most valuable players from last year return, and both are South Medford seniors. Hunter Bradford led the Siskiyou boys victory, and Julissa Tago did likewise for the Siskiyou girls. In the boys game, Bradford scored 11 of his game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter. He also had 10 rebounds and three assists as the Siskiyous rallied from an eight-point deficit. Eleven players scored in double figures, including four others who are returning: Ashland's Walker Shibley (15), Schireman (14), Rogue River's Chris Campbell (14) and Phoenix's Thomas Skaff (10). In the 2015 girls game, Tago and South Medford teammate Jasmin Falls battled on opposite sides, with Tago's Siskiyous prevailing. They each scored their team's final four points, with Tago hitting the game-winning jumper from the free-throw line with 2 seconds remaining. Tago had 20 points and nine rebounds in earning her second straight MVP. Falls, a senior who is not available to play this year, had 18 points and eight rebounds. The coaches for the boys are Brian McDermott (Rogues), who guided the Southern Oregon to the NAIA national tournament, and Danny Miles (Siskiyous), who recently finished his 45th and final season as the Oregon Tech coach. For the girls, College of the Siskiyous head coach Tom Powers will lead the Rogues, and SOU assistants Natasha Smith and Meghan de los Reyes — fresh off a national runner-up showing — will coach the Siskiyous.
