'Irrelevant' argument ended in Wimer homicide, police say Monday Apr 24, 2017 at 11:18 AM Apr 24, 2017 at 6:02 PM Mark Freeman Mail Tribune @MTwriterFreeman WIMER — Investigators believe an "irrelevant" argument led to an altercation that culminated in a Wimer man fatally shooting the apparently unarmed son of his neighbor inside the shooter's rural trailer. Christopher Dale Haase, 25, fired a single rifle shot that killed David Anthony Vaughn, 40, after Vaughn entered Haase's trailer just after 1 a.m. Sunday in the 9800 block of West Evans Creek Road, according to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff Nate Sickler said Vaughn was unarmed at the time, but declined further comment. Sheriff's Detective Gabe Burchfiel said no other shots were fired. Haase has not been arrested and detectives continue to collect evidence that will be presented to the Jackson County District Attorney's Office for evaluation, Burchfiel said.  Burchfiel said investigators so far are "not really clear" on the motive of the altercation, but it appears at this time to be superficial. "It was over something that's just kind of irrelevant," Burchfiel said. "It just doesn't make a whole lot of sense." Birchfiel declined to be more specific. Court records show that Vaughn was a serial drunken driver with a long criminal history dating back to a vehicle-theft conviction in Multnomah County in 1998, where the vast majority of his Oregon criminal history lies. Vaughn most recently was indicted Feb. 1 on charges of driving while suspended, being a felon in possession of a weapon, fourth-degree assault and harassment over an alleged Dec. 18, 2016, assault in Jackson County, court records show. At the time of the shooting, Vaughn had warrants out for his arrest involving a suspected driving under the influence of intoxicants case in Multnomah County and in a money-laundering case out of Lake County, Burchfiel said. It was unknown how long Vaughn had been in Jackson County, Burchfiel said. Haase has no criminal record in Oregon, court records show. Haase lives in a trailer on the property that also includes a trailer where Vaughn's father lived and was visited by Vaughn, Burchfiel said. The pair knew of each other but there were no previous known altercations between Haase and Vaughn, Burchfiel said.  Burchfiel declined to detail the physical altercation between the men or whether that fight occurred inside or outside of Haase's trailer. The case began when Haase called 911 shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday and told a dispatcher that he had shot a man who had entered his residence, police said. Deputies found Vaughn dead at the scene from a single gunshot wound.
