With split against Roseburg, Mustangs in Area 4 control Local roundup ROSEBURG -- Proving it's never too late, the Medford Mustangs took a giant step toward the Area 4 American Legion championship Friday night. Trailing 2-0 in the seventh inning, the Mustangs rallied with three runs to edge Roseburg's Dr. Stewarts in the nightcap, 3-2, to secure a key doubleheader split. Roseburg used four Medford errors to win the first game, 9-4. Winning the second game put the Mustangs in the driver's seat for the Area 4 title. Medford (45-10, 13-5 Area 4) owns the tiebreaker with Roseburg (13-5) after taking 3-of-4 from its rivals. The Mustangs can secure the league championship with a doubleheader sweep of the Eugene Challengers on Sunday at Miles Field. Game time is 5 p.m. Casey Campbell opened Friday's rally with a leadoff single in the seventh. Jarred Pagnini followed with a single, with both runners advancing on a sacrifice bunt by Nate Mayben. Kenny Halpin's RBI single trimmed the Mustangs' deficit to 2-1, with Pagnini tying the game after a balk. With Halpin now at second, Brent Foster singled to right field to put Medford ahead 3-2. Roseburg attempted to rally with one out in the bottom of the seventh as Tim Alvarez walked J.J. Wohlford and Ryan Morrison. Alvarez then forced harmless pop-ups by D.J. Kooken and Levi Webber to end the game. Alvarez improved his record to 8-0 after not allowing a hit after the second inning. Campbell was pinned with the loss for Medford despite allowing only four earned runs in seven innings. Foster and Pickrel both went 2-for-3 to lead the Mustangs. MEDFORD NATIONALS PREVAIL -- At the Medford National Little League Fields, Medford's Stephen Milton smacked two doubles in leading his age 11-12 team to a 13-0 win over Gold Valley in District 8 Little League Tournament action. Matt Schmelzer pitched four shutout innings and Ben Boziol shut down Gold Valley in the fifth inning to preserve the two-hit shutout and eliminate Gold Valley. In Friday's other action, Central Point scored 19 runs in eliminating Brookings; Roseburg upended the Grants Pass Nationals, 12-7; and Rogue River topped the Grants Pass Americans, 10-4. Central Point plays the Grants Pass Nationals today at 9 a.m., while Rogue River plays Roseburg at noon and the Grants Pass Americans play the Medford Nationals at 3 p.m. Softball WILSON PACES FILLIES -- At Seattle, Kaitlin Wilson allowed only four hits and one run over 14 innings in leading the Oregon Fillies to two wins at the 18-under Northwest Regional Softball Tournament. Wilson allowed only one hit with 12 strikeouts as the Fillies edged the Shoreline Rage of Seattle, 2-1. Erin Glantz went 2-for-2 and drove in both runs for the Fillies. Wilson, from Class 2A Corbett High, added nine strikeouts in the second game, with Megumi Hackett providing the offense with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate. The Fillies play the Washington Mustangs of Olympia, Wash., today at 5:30 p.m. A win today would put the Fillies only three wins on Sunday away from advancing to nationals. MEDFORD AMERICAN 5, MILTON-FREEWATER 2 -- At Portland, the Medford American Senior All-Stars made a strong debut at the 14-16 state tournament. Laurel Kelly and Sarah Fetty each allowed only three hits over seven innings. The pitchers were flanked by a solid defense that committed no errors, including several standout plays by shortstop Shawna Jackson. Ashley Nelson paced the offense with four runs on a 3-for-4 effort. Jaime Guider chipped in two RBIs for Medford American, which will play Rogue River today at 12:30 p.m. Rogue River beat Columbia 11-10 in its opener.
