Does anyone in media land have an idea when we can drop in for a local brew? I'm ready to wet my whistle. — Tom R., Medford We hear you, Tom. After all, it's just a three-block walk from our place to the Common Block. Nonetheless, if you're hoping for some holiday cheer, you'll have to look elsewhere. We tracked down Rachel Koning, events and marketing manager for Common Block Brewing Co., only to discover the anticipated late-fall, or holiday season, opening has been replaced by a mid-January debut for the brewery and pub next to the Lithia Motors headquarters on the east side of The Commons. Owners Alex and Danielle Amarotico are steadily making progress but have encountered some headwinds. The establishment's custom-designed chairs, for example, take 14 weeks from ordering. She said the owners thought it was better to wait until after the first of the year to train new hires rather than rush things in late December. "It was just too much to ask for a big training between Christmas and New Years," Koning said. The old Lithia Dodge floor has been torn up, new plumbing put in and concrete relaid. Beams are in place for the mezzanine brew deck, and Alex Amarotico continues crafting table and bar tops. "We're pretty confident we'll be opening in mid-January," Koning said.
