Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend February 1, 2006 Ashland scores historic 19th victory By KEVIN GOFF Mail Tribune CENTRAL POINT — Expectations were high for the Ashland High girls basketball team. But the Grizzlies pushed the bar up a notch Tuesday night with a 47-34 victory over Crater in a Southern Oregon Conference game at Crater High. The win moved Ashland to 19-1 overall, which set a school record for most wins in a season. The 1998-99 Grizzly squad held the old mark with 18 victories. "Pretty amazing," said second-year Ashland coach Ken Lathen of his team’s record. "There have been a lot of pretty good Ashland teams. And we should shatter that thing with all the games we have left." The Grizzlies (8-1 SOC) also maintained their one-game lead over Roseburg and Grants Pass with five games remaining. Advertisement The ninth-ranked Comets (14-5, 6-3 SOC), meanwhile, are now in sole possession of fourth place, one game behind Roseburg and Grants Pass and a game ahead of fifth-place North Medford. "I think what this loss does is force us to re-establish our goals," said Crater coach David Heard. "Thoughts of winning the conference are now over, in my mind. For us now, we have a real battle for second place." Despite an early 8-3 deficit, Ashland stormed to a 26-19 lead at the half and used a 10-0 run over the final five minutes to pull away. Senior guard Jamie Roupp scored 15 points to go with four steals and three assists, while freshman 6-foot-3 post Brenna Heater added 11 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks. "We knew Crater was a very good team," said Roupp. "I thought our defense did a great job. I’m really impressed with what we were able to do tonight." The Comets (14-5, 6-3 SOC), despite boasting the tallest front line in the league with three 6-2 posts, could not find an answer for Roupp or Heater. "Ashland has the best two players in the league," said Heard. "They’re so difficult to play because they never seem to get rattled. Most of that is because of Jamie Roupp. "That inside-outside punch is tough to deal with." Junior guard Hannah Sohl also provided a lift with a season-high eight points and a staunch defensive effort on Crater’s leading scorer, Emily Brookins. The lightning-quick Sohl limited Brookins to five points — nearly 10 below her SOC average. "She’s a very good player," said Sohl of Brookins. "It was primarily me and (freshman guard) Kelsey McKinnis that were on her. But really it was a team effort to hold her down." Added Lathen: "Hannah is the best pure defender in the league, in my opinion. But I guess I’m a little biased." The Grizzlies mixed in a full-court press that wreaked havoc on Crater’s offensive sets. "We practiced against it," said Heard. "For some reason we just didn’t run the press break. We made way too many silly errors." Even with Brookins struggling to find the range, Crater shot out to an early lead behind 6-2 post Aundrea Albright. The sophomore, who finished with a team-high 11 points, managed to fend off Heater with a sneaky left-handed hook from close range that gave the Comets an 8-3 advantage. Ashland answered with an 8-2 run to close the quarter, then extended its lead with a 9-0 burst in the second period. The Comets slowly closed the gap with a 10-9 edge in scoring in the third quarter and Brookins’ drilled a 3-pointer — her first field goal of the game — to narrow the margin to 37- 34 with 4:40 to play. But Roupp and Bailey Hasty each hit a pair of free throws and Heater scored four points to push the lead back to double digits. "This is a really big win for us," said Sohl. "Now we have to stay at this level for the rest (of the SOC schedule)." Kenna Reiter scored eight points, had six rebounds and five assists and Amanda Haas hauled in seven boards for Crater, which hosts 10th-ranked Grants Pass on Friday. Ashland takes on visiting Eagle Point. "We’re really coming together right now," said Lathen. "There’s a lot of time left, but I like where we’re at."
