Crater honored by SSC Nov 28, 2007 12:00 AM A A The Crater cross country team had four boys make the seven-person first-team Southern Sky Conference team and five girls, including runner of the year Riley Swanson, make the seven-person first team. Crater's Justin Loftus was also named the boys and girls coach of the year to cap a successful year for the Comets in which both teams captured Class 5A state titles. At the state meet, the Crater girls scored the fewest points ever by any team of any gender with 16. The Comets had five of the top eight finishers at state including Kayleigh Tyerman (2nd, 19:11), Swanson (3rd, 19:12), Silver Seibert (4th, 19:13), Arianne Lafierre (6th, 19:20), Laurie Stoutenburgh (8th, 19:26). All five were named to the SSC first team. Aria Hemphill from Ashland also made the first team. She finished 20th at the state meet with a time of 19:58. The Crater boys edged Hermiston by two points to win the state title. Top finishers were: Zach Elliott (6th, 16:16), Wyatt Rice-Narusch (10th, 16:26). Those two were named to the first team as were Curtis Yungen and Josh Elliott. Ashland's Matt Miner was the male runner of the year. He joined teammate Ryland Karlovich on the first team. Miner finished second at the state meet, behind Marshfield's Jared Bassett (15:51), with a time of 16:00. Klamath Union's Alex Peterson was the only runner not from Ashland or Crater on the first team. He finished fourth at the state meet with a time of 16:04.
