Fahndrich, a 5-foot-10 junior, spent the better part of Saturday flying around the court — often diving to it — to give the Crater girls basketball team whatever lift she could provide and it all paid off in a 56-33 triumph over Central. Fahndrich managed 12 points, six steals and five rebounds to provide a spark for the third-ranked Comets, who wore down the visiting Panthers to pull away with a 35-16 advantage in the second half. “We wanted to get to the state tournament and I figured I needed to step up to make it happen,” said Fahndrich, who credited her years in volleyball for giving her the confidence to sacrifice her body in pursuit of the ball. “We needed to do whatever it took.” Fahndrich’s story was one that could be repeated up and down the Crater (23-2) roster as one player after another came in waves to pressure Central (14-11) in a physical first-round affair. Crater senior Courtney Setzer finished with 14 points, 13 rebounds, five steals and four blocks, junior Cheyenne Scott added 10 points and a pair of steals and sophomore Mallory Heard had eight points, six rebounds and two steals to help the Comets advance to the 5A state tournament for the first time in five years. In this game, however, it was Fahndrich who seemingly came up with one key play after another to help Crater pull away. She banked in Crater’s lone 3-pointer of the first half and scored four of her team’s final six points en route to a 21-17 halftime advantage. Fahndrich was part of a 7-2 surge early in the third quarter and just did all the little things that made it difficult for Central to get a rhythm on offense. “That’s what she’s about and why she’s a first-team all-conference kid,” Crater head coach David Heard said of Fahndrich. “It’s not really for her scoring, it’s the energy, it’s the rebounding and she makes right decisions ... and if there’s a 50-50 ball she’s going to get it. She just kind of does everything really well and is definitely the toughest kid we have. It spurred us on there in a game that was super-physical.” Neither team shot particularly well in the first half, Crater going 7-for-37 from the field and Central 5-for-27, but the numbers picked up for the Comets in the final 16 minutes (13-for-32) and the Panthers, who were 4-for-22, simply didn’t have the ability to stave them off. “In the first half we were getting opportunities and we weren’t hitting them,” said Central head coach Julie McDonald, whose team is in its first year up from the 4A level. “But in the second half, I think their pressure just got to us.” The Panthers were harried in their attack thanks to Crater’s frenzied full-court pressure and essentially pushed out of their element by the swarming Comets. “We were trying to dribble through the traps and the press without passing through it,” added McDonald. “It was probably a little bit of fatigue being pressed and running the whole time. We’re usually not a team that gets pressed because we usually deal with it pretty well. You’ve got to give it to Crater, they’ve got a good press and they kept it on the full four quarters and, like they do most teams, they wear you down.” Kes Noles added four points, two steals, two assists and two blocks for Crater, while fellow senior Bailey Bascom had four steals and Olivia Ryerson added five rebounds and a third-quarter 3-pointer. Sai Tapasa (11 points, 10 rebounds) and Kylie Nash (11 points, eight rebounds) led the way for Central, with Alex Alvarez adding six points and eight rebounds. The Panthers were seeking their first trip to the state tournament since advancing to the 4A tourney in 2010. For their efforts, the Comets will get a familiar foe in Midwestern League co-champion Springfield in the state quarterfinals at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. The MWL teams split their regular-season games, with Crater winning 45-43 in overtime and fourth-ranked Springfield winning 32-27. “For these girls, this is a whole new experience so they’re super-excited,” said coach Heard. “I would expect this game to go right down to the wire like the others. It’s going to come down to who can make a big shot or who makes their free throws. It’s going to be a war just like the other two.” Before Wednesday, however, the veteran Crater coach doesn’t want his players to do anything but soak up the experience. “What I’ve really asked them to do over the next few days is to think about and enjoy what they’ve accomplished,” said coach Heard, “because I think sometimes we put all this pressure on like we have to go win the state tournament. They just need to enjoy the season. It’s about to come to an end and we get to spend a really fun week together at a really special place.
