SOU volleyball takes third at tournament FRESNO, Calif. - Southern Oregon University co-captains Shelly Gorin and April Lowe helped the Raiders volleyball team to a third-place finish in the eight-school Sunbirds Invitational Friday and Saturda at Fresno Pacific University. Gorin, an outside hitter, and Lowe, a defensive specialist, demonstrated "great leadership" according to coach Paul Elliott, whose team went 3-1 in the tournament. The host Sunbirds won the tournament for the ninth straight year, while Azusa Pacific placed second. The Raiders dropped a four-game match to open the tournament Thursday to Concordia-Nebraska in the 30-point rally scoring system adopted in college volleyball this season. Southern Oregon evened its record at 1-1 with a straight-game victory over Embry-Riddle of Daytona Beach, Fla., Thursday. On Friday, SOU continued its winning ways with a four-game victory against Notre Dame de Namur of Belmont, Calif., and completed the tournament with a three-game win over Bethany College. Sophomore outside hitter Kristina Matchett paced the Raiders in kills, while senior setter Sabrina Garboden was the team assist leader. Matchett was selected to the all-tournament team. "We are very powerful offensively," said Elliott. "We're young and trying to figure some things out." After two more matches in California, the Raiders return home to open Cascade Conference action at 7 p.m. Friday against Warner Pacific.
