Eagle Points picks up first victory of the season EAGLE POINT - It took four games, but Eagle Point moved into the winner's column in boys soccer. Behind a hat trick from senior Casey Murdock, the Eagles improved their record to 1-2-1 Thursday with a 5-0 triumph over Sutherlin in non-conference play. "We were pretty stubborn on defense," said Eagles coach Coco Ortiz, citing Thomas Ussary for solid play in goal. Eagle Point took a 3-0 lead in the first half, but Ortiz was more impressed with his team's second-half play. "I thought we played better," he said of coming out of halftime. "The tempo was better for us in the second half. The passing was much better. I was pleased." An example occurred on the Eagles' final goal, when Drew Curriston scored following a series of passes from midfield to the flank and back. The assist went to Eric Matteson. "That was a nice combination," said Ortiz. Prior to that, Murdock dominated. He sandwiched goals at the ninth and 29th minutes around a Brandon St. Clair goal at the 17th minute. Chris Harrington assisted on the game's first goal. Murdock's second-half goal, at the 17th minute, came on an assist from Curriston. KLAMATH UNION 2, CORVALLIS 2 - At Corvallis, Luis Garcia scored a game-tying goal in the second half for Klamath Union in the non-conference contest. Zach Tucker provided the only score for the Pelicans in the first half, leaving Klamath down 2-1 at the break. The Pelicans moved to 1-0-2 on the season. ROSEBURG 3, THURSTON 0 - At Springfield, Roseburg used two second-half goals to seal a non-conference win. Matt Mitchell, Mikkel Anderson and Brent Randall provided the offense for the Indians. District 6 ST. MARY'S 2, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 - At Cave Junction, St. Mary's improved to 2-0 in District 6 play behind sturdy defense and goals from Thatcher Jones and Joel Frank. The Crusaders peppered the Cougar goal but just missed on some shots and had others deflected. Jones scored seven minutes into the match on a shot by teammate Trevin Phillips that was deflected. Frank scored from 18 yards out at the 26th minute. Crusader stopper Peter Staver and sweeper Jordan Frankel had fine games, and Matt Burt was just inches away from putting in a couple of shots. HIDDEN VALLEY 3, HENLEY 1 - At Klamath Falls, Hidden Valley opened up District 6 play with a victory. Darren McLaughlin, Dillon Borda and Mosiah Arteaga all tallied goals for the defending Class 3A state champion Mustangs. Gabe Hernandez scored the lone goal for Henley. NORTH VALLEY 1, MAZAMA 0 - At Klamath Falls, Brodie Phillips scored the lone goal in the first half of a District 6 win for North Valley in the league-opener. Phillips broke up the scoreless tie at the 22nd-minute mark on a long shot from midfield that was misjudged by the Vikings' goalkeeper. Mazama squandered 18 shots on goal and held the Knights to just eight in the loss.
