Arik Armstead’s NFL journey was more of a homecoming. The junior defensive end from Sacramento, where he watched the proceedings with his family, was taken with the 17th overall pick by the San Francisco 49ers during Thursday’s draft. “All my family lives in Northern California. Being able to play for the Niners and represent Northern California, being a Northern California guy, is going to be huge for me,” Armstead said during a conference call with reporters. “I want to represent this part of the state in the right way.” On the road to the College Football Playoff, Armstead and the Ducks dominated California in the regular season and defeated Arizona in the Pac-12 championship at Levi’s Stadium, the 49ers’ fancy new digs in Santa Clara, Calif. “The stadium has treated me well,” Armstead said. “I look forward to playing my next game in there and spending however long my career is in there.” Armstead dealt with injuries early in his college career but made 46 tackles, including 5.5 for loss and 2.5 sacks, in 13 games last season. DeForest Buckner, who put the NFL draft on hold for another year, had 81 tackles, including 13 for loss and four sacks, at the other defensive end spot. San Francisco and Oregon both play 3-4 base defenses. “I’m definitely a nickel pass rusher,” Armstead said. “Rushing inside over guards and center, I did that at Oregon in our nickel packages. I have the athleticism and length to do that. I’m looking forward to doing that more and having the opportunity to get after the quarterback more.” San Diego moved up from No. 17 to No. 15 to grab Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon. The Chargers had to give up a fourth- and fifth-round pick to swap spots in the first round with the 49ers. ‘”You never trade back unless you have an alternative plan in mind,” 49ers general manager Trent Baalke told The Associated Press. “We felt good about two players. Arik was the one we were coveting at that pick. He’s unique in the sense that he’s 6-7, he’s 290-plus pounds. He’s a tremendous athlete for his size and for that position.” Mariota (No. 2 overall) and Armstead getting drafted marked the third time Oregon has had two first-round picks in the same year. In 1972, wide receiver Ahmad Rashad (No. 4, St. Louis Cardinals) and offensive lineman Tom Drougas (No. 22, Baltimore Colts) were selected. In 2013, outside linebacker Dion Jordan (No. 3, Miami Dolphins) and offensive lineman Kyle Long (No. 20, Chicago Bears) were selected. The most Oregon players taken in one draft was six in 1972, 2002 and 2009.
