What is the point of that? And, if I don’t, are there penalties? Can I get a ticket? — Jan T, Rogue River Turning your headlights on in safety corridors is a good idea, says Kevin Beckstrom of the Oregon Department of Transportation. But, he adds, you won’t get a ticket if you don’t. "Signs in the safety corridors are advisory signs and are not enforceable," says Beckstrom. "It’s still a good idea to turn on your lights though, because of the increased visibility it gives your vehicle." Safety corridors are stretches of state highways that have a three-year average of fatal and serious injury crashes greater than the statewide average for similar kinds of roadways. Advertisement A safety corridor may be decommissioned if the three-year average of fatal and serious injury crashes drops to rates comparable to similar roadways. Until then, drivers are asked to pay extra attention and carefully obey all traffic laws when driving in these areas. Common driving errors in safety corridors include speeding, tailgating, unsafe passing, unsafe lane change and driving on the wrong side of the road. OK, that’s enough to have us lighting up.
