The RiverDogs used a 13-run sixth inning to rally for an 18-8 victory in the opener, then edged the Spartans 2-1 in the nightcap behind Brandon Willer’s strong pitching performance. In the first game, the Spartans scored two runs in the top of the sixth to take an 8-5 lead. But Southern Oregon answered in a big way. The RiverDogs (16-8) sent 15 batters to the plate in the bottom of the frame to score 13 runs to end the contest. Matt Smith contributed a double to start the outburst and added a three-run triple to the 11-hit explosion. Phil Ouellette added two hits, three walks and three RBIs, while Eric Beasly and Ken Strate each contributed two hits and two RBIs. In Game 2, Willer kept the Spartans in check by striking out six and scattering seven hits. Eugene’s third-inning run was unearned. Southern Oregon took a 1-0 lead in the second when Heil walked, stole second and scored on Smith’s two-out single. The RiverDogs pushed across the eventual winning run in the fourth. Beasly walked, moved to second on a wild pitch and came around to score when Smith’s grounder to second was thrown away.
