The sophomore forward made some noise with his foot on Tuesday as North Medford secured a state playoff berth with a 2-1 overtime victory over South Medford at Hoffbuhr Field. The Black Tornado (7-7, 6-6 SOC) will travel to the Portland are Tuesday to play the No. 4 team out of the Pac-9 League. The loss ended the season for perennial state playoff team South Medford (5-9, 4-8 SOC). Lopez scored the game-winner on a free kick from 20 yards in the first minute of the second 10-minute overtime period. Soper recognized Lopez’s strong foot and prepared him if such a play should arise. "Today we made sure (Lopez) took the kick, and he cashed in," said Soper. "You have to nudge him in there. It was a great confidence booster for Joe." Advertisement The Panthers held a 1-0 halftime lead on Alex Arizaga’s goal at the 17th minute. Arizaga stole the ball just outside the Black Tornado penalty box, brought the ball to within 6 yards of the net and beat North junior goalie Lee Seeley on a shot in the left corner. Despite trailing at halftime, Soper was not discouraged. "We were playing our game," said Soper. "We just had one defensive letdown." The Black Tornado evened the score 10 minutes into the second half when Lars Flesland scored off a Colton Major free kick. Major crossed the kick to Flesland, who flicked the ball into the net from about 5 yards out. North Medford had an 11-10 edge in shots on goal, and both teams took five corner kicks. Soper praised the performances of senior midfielder Dusty Andries and defender Scott Reid. "With our young team, when we’ve been down in the past, we hadn’t come back until today," said Soper. "We showed some guts and determination." ASHLAND 1, KLAMATH UNION 0 — At Ashland, Rodrigo Ramos’ goal enabled Ashland to edge Klamath Union in the SOC finale, finishing off their SOC championship season. The Grizzlies open the state playoffs Nov. 5 at home against the fourth-place team from either the Portland Interscholastic League or the Three Rivers League. Last year, Ashland won the SOC and advanced to the state semifinals. Ramos scored in the 36th minute with an assist by Brandon Golden to give Ashland a 1-0 lead. The Grizzlies (11-1 SOC) held an advantage in shots (12-8) and corner kicks (6-0). ROSEBURG 1, GRANTS PASS 0 — At Roseburg, Tony Sanchez dribbled through a pair of Grants Pass defenders and hammered through a shot from 20 yards out in the 57th minute for the game’s only score at Fir Grove Park. Cuyler Ziegler was solid in goal for Roseburg, making two spectacular saves. The Indians finished the regular season 9-3 in SOC play and 11-3 overall. They’ll meet the No. 2 representative from the PIL in a first-round playoff game at home on Nov. 5. Grants Pass finished third in the SOC with a 6-6 record. Girls ASHLAND 4, KLAMATH UNION 3, SHOOTOUT — At Klamath Falls, Maddy Stokes ended the tight contest on the first sudden-death attempt as Ashland wound up 6-8 and in fifth place in the SOC. The game was tied 2-2 through regulation, KU getting two goals in the final 12 minutes from Ali Casey. In overtime, the Pelicans took an early lead, but Katie Cowger’s corner kick set up Tess Golling for a header with three minutes left to knot the score again at 3-3 and force a shootout. Both teams were successful on four shots before it went into sudden death. Cowger had given the Grizzlies a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute off an assist from Molly Macgraw. Ashland’s other score, in the 50th minute, was by Stokes off a free kick by Hannah Sohl. CRATER 5, EAGLE POINT 0 — At Central Point, Crater advanced to the Class 4A playoffs as the SOC’s fourth-place team and will travel to play the No. 4 team in the Pac-9 Conference on Tuesday. The Comets, who got two goals each from Karina Ramirez and Janelle Stoner, improved to 7-7 overall. Ramirez scored in the fourth minute and 52nd minute. Stoner took a ball that both Caitlin Sprenger and Ramirez assisted on and scored in the 20th minute to make it 2-0 at halftime. She also dribbled in and tallied in the 47th minute. Rachel Smith scored Crater’s other goal, and keepers Somer Reed and Katie Orr combined for the shutout. ROSEBURG 2, GRANTS PASS 1 — At Grants Pass, Roseburg (6-8 SOC) received goals by Julie Piper and T.C. Rhan in the first 14 minutes. Grants Pass answered one minute later on a goal by Megan Cardiff off an assist from Abbey Klingel. Grants Pass had 20 shots on goal to 15 for the Indians.
