Medford Fire Marshal Greg Kleinberg said two people were inside the house at 1492 Lawnridge St. when the fire started, which was about 9:40 a.m. One sustained burns to his hands and feet and the second, who was not burned, drove the burn victim to the hospital, he said. Medford Fire-Rescue Chief Brian Fish said the first crews on scene saw large columns of smoke pouring from the garage and initiated a second alarm to summon more resources. Medford Fire-Rescue and Jackson County Fire Districts 3 and 5 responded with six engines, two wildland units and approximately 30 personnel. The fire was controlled within 30 minutes, according to an MFR press release. Tires on a BMW parked in the driveway of the house exploded, Fish said. Vanessa Campbell, a neighbor and resident of Lawnridge Street, said police told her ammunition was igniting as well. The fire spread via an attic to a residence at 859 N. Berkeley Way, which suffered a 25 percent loss, Fish estimated. A house next door to the house on Lawnridge Street suffered heat damage. Chris Cutts, a resident of the house on Berkeley Way, said he was working on nearby Keene Way when he heard about the fire. Cutts reported damage to parts of his house, but he said most of the interior was saved. Cutts said his dog, which was on the property at the time, was not injured in the fire and had been taken to safety in his car. There may have been dogs injured in the property at 1492 Lawnridge St., however. "There were reportedly two dogs in the house at the time," one of which fled the house, Kleinberg said. "We don't know where that dog ended up, and we didn't see the second dog." Fish said the cause of the fire was under investigation and Kleinberg said authorities have begun the process of getting a search warrant for their investigation. Fish said landscaping helped spread the flames. "These bushes are like gasoline when they get going," Fish said. "This time of year ... this stuff is so dry, it contributed to the fire on the Berkeley side." Campbell, who was home at the time, said she called 911 when she saw the smoke. She told her children to prepare to evacuate and went across the street to the house adjacent to the burning home to make sure the children who lived there evacuated. "I was just concerned about the neighbors," Campbell said. "I just knocked on their door, I don't know if they were sleeping, [but] they came out of the house."
