Police have a warrant charging Hilario Garay Padilla, 19, of Monmouth, with first- and second-degree robbery, first-degree kidnapping and first-degree theft. They believe he and two other Hispanic men went to La Tapatia, a market selling Mexican food and other goods, around 5:30 p.m. Feb. 6, ordered a burrito and tacos, then stole about $50,000 worth of cash and jewelry at gunpoint. The robbers herded store workers and customers into a restroom, then fled, police reports said. Officers from Phoenix, Talent and the Jackson County sheriff’s department searched with the help of a dog, but couldn’t find the robbers that night. Investigators gathered a surveillance tape and fingerprints from the store. They also studied a possible link to a similar robbery in the Portland area. Advertisement With the help of a distributor that supplies Mexican restaurants and markets, Phoenix officer John Koury sent out pictures of the robbery suspects to businesses similar to La Tapatia up and down Interstate 5. Someone at a store in Independence recognized Garay and notified police, Koury said. Koury collected Garay’s Driver and Motor Vehicle Services records and used his driver’s license photo in a photo lineup. The victims at La Tapatia picked his photo as the man who had robbed them, Koury said. He presented the evidence to a grand jury and got an indictment and warrant. Police in Monmouth have monitored Garay’s last known address there, but haven’t found him. Now Koury is broadening the search by notifying the public and police departments throughout the state. "I hope someone will tell us where he is," Koury said. Police also are looking for additional information about the other two men seen in surveillance photos from La Tapatia. One of the other suspects looks 25 to 28 years old, stands 5 feet 5 inches, and weighs 150 pounds. He has a thick mustache, and during the robbery he wore a dark colored jacket and a dark leather baseball cap with a backwards letter "D" on the front. The other man looks 28 to 30 years old, is 6 feet tall and weighs about 250 pounds. He has a mustache and goatee, and during the robbery work a green vinyl jacket and a dark baseball cap with a white stripe on the bill. All three suspects are considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached by citizens, police said.
