Roseburg topples feisty Crater CENTRAL POINT � You can call the Crater Comets the hard-luck kids of the Southern Oregon Conference. The Comets muscled up to heavily favored Roseburg and nearly pulled off the upset, only to lose 64-43 Friday night. Crater�s three SOC losses have come by a total of six points. Joe Newton was the hero for the visiting Indians. The 6-foot-7 junior post scored the go-ahead bucket on a putback with one minute to play, then sank two free throws in the final seconds to seal the victory. Newton finished with 19 points, eight of them coming in the fourth quarter, and nine rebounds. "We played our best game of the season tonight," said Crater coach Matt Meunier, whose Comets slipped to 1-3 in the SOC and 5-9 overall. "We threw a zone at them and played very good defense the whole night. "We deserved better, but they�re a good team, and Newton made a couple of big plays down the stretch." Crater held a one-point lead with two minutes to play when Meunier had his team spread the court. The Comets worked about a minute off the clock and had a player cut to the basket unguarded. But the pass went off the backboard, Roseburg collected the rebound and Newton scored at the other end to put the Indians ahead to stay. Ashland turned the ball over five times early in the final period and the Pelicans (5-7, 2-2 SOC) hit 8 of 16 free throws to seal the win. Kyle Allred led Ashland (5-7, 0-4 SOC) with 15 points. GRANTS PASS 66, EAGLE POINT 50 � At Grants Pass, the second-ranked Cavemen (14-0, 4-0 SOC) led 34-26 at halftime, then put the Eagles away with a 16-5 burst in the third quarter. Ian Elseth helped the Cavemen take control in the third period when the 6-foot-7 senior post scored seven of his game-high 21 points.
