A 21-foot travel trailer at the 4400 block of Biddle Road in Central Point was engulfed in flames when crews arrived at 12:29 a.m. Sunday. Meanwhile, a 34-foot Fleetwood motor home belonging to a Canadian couple caught fire on Interstate 5 near milepost 10 about 3 a.m. Sunday. The names of the couple in the motor home weren’t available Sunday, although fire officials said they were traveling from British Columbia. The couple weren’t injured and reportedly spent the remainder of the night in a local hotel. No estimate of damage was available. Cause of the fire wasn’t known, although fire officials say that most motor homes catch on fire because of transmissions overheating. Advertisement The Oregon Department of Transportation helped keep traffic moving in the southbound lanes while waiting for the motor home to be cleared from the side of the road. The vehicle was towed away after sunrise at 6:45 a.m. Fire District 5 crews responded to the motor home fire on Interstate 5, but the Oregon State Police troopers didn’t respond because they don’t operate between 4 and 6 p.m. because of budget cuts. The owner of the trailer, Dennis Holmes, told Fire District 3 officials that he thought a small electric heater was the source of the fire. Holmes, who was asleep in the trailer when the fire started, escaped without injuries, fire officials said. Fire investigators haven’t determined the cause of the blaze, but the loss of the trailer was estimated at $5,000. Fire crews stayed at the scene until 1:45 a.m. to make sure a nearby barn didn’t catch on fire.
