Mail Tribune 100, Oct. 24, 1916 Monday Oct 24, 2016 at 12:01 AM Oct. 24, 1916 HAWLEY REQUESTS ASHLAND PEOPLE TO VOTE TICKET Congressman Hawley spoke at Ashland Monday and made an address of nearly two and a half hours. The effect of the sweeping trend of republicans voting for Wilson influenced the speaker from the start and his opening remarks were intended to head off this sentiment. He declared that it was a great mistake to vote for men, that parties representing great issues should be voted for regardless of the man. He seemed seriously disturbed over the present trend of independent voting and thinking and told his audience that his proposition of voting for men had destroyed great empires in the past. At the close of his speech he spoke of his own accomplishments, eulogized Hughes and warmed up a strong appeal to vote for "the entire republican county ticket from top to bottom." LARNED SELLS TEN CARS APPLE JUICE W. C. Larned returned this morning from a week's business trip to Portland. Mr. Larned sold about 10 carloads of apple juice and gallon apples for shipment east through the A. Rupert Co., large brokers of Portland. "The market of canned apples," says Mr. Larned, "bids fair to top $2.50 per dozen, and our company is planning to pack some ten cars. All jobbers in Portland are short on their orders, and everything in tin is high. I look for continued high prices on all canned stuff for another year at least." Mr. Larned attended the O. N. C.-Nebraska football game Saturday afternoon with A. T. Sieberts, who spent last summer in Medford, and returned to the college with Mr. Sieberts for Sunday. He reports that at a straw vote of O. A. C. and U. of O. students the girls voted 2 to 1 for Wilson and thatt he male vote was about even. The sentiment in Portland seems to be that Wilson will run ahead of his ticket and be elected decisively.
