Pope adds new chapter to time in Russian jail GRANTS PASS - A book detailing Edmond Pope's 253 days in a Russian prison on spy charges is expected to hit bookstores in November. Pope, speaking at the Grants Pass home of his mother, Elizabeth Pope, said the book will be titled "Torpedoed," a reference to the high-tech torpedo plans he was accused of stealing. Pope, a 1965 graduate of Grants Pass High School, led Saturday's Boatnik parade through downtown as its grand marshal. He was arrested in Moscow in April 2000, and was found guilty in December by a Russian judge after a closed-door trial. On Dec. 14, he was pardoned by Russian President Vladimir Putin and released. The Russian president cited "humanitarian reasons" for the decision. Pope's health had been deteriorating, and his family suspected the bone cancer he suffers from was growing worse. Pope says he is not out of the woods yet, but his doctors are optimistic "My health is good. I had another surgical procedure two weeks ago, so I have a new scar on my neck," he said of the operation on his throat. "They removed a lump, but it was benign." The lump was discovered while doctors were conducting a scan to further examine his bone cancer, which remains in remission. He has also been treated for skin cancer since his return to the United States. He has turned most of the duties at his high-tech company in Pennsylvania over to his two business partners, so that he can concentrate on writing "Torpedoed." The book will be published by Little Brown, the publishing subsidiary of AOL-Time Warner. Pope said that nine of 12 chapters are complete. He'll be meeting with publishers in June to map out a marketing strategy for the book. "At that time, we'll get serious about negotiating any movie rights," he said. "I think it will be a good (book)." He found it amusing that the Russians have already published a book about the incident, titled "Pope's Spy Adventure in Russia."
