The Oregonian Cup recognizes overall excellence by Oregon high schools in academics, athletics and activities. Schools earn points based on their participation and finish in Oregon School Activities Association state championships and for top-10 finishes in the OSAA academic all-state program. A sportsmanship component, whereby schools are awarded points for having no ejections, is included as well. North Medford scored high academically with its girls golf, tennis and softball teams. Each squad finished among the top three in the state in terms of grade-point average. Out of the 17 sports that the Black Tornado competed in, 15 tasted state playoff competition on either an individual or team basis. "This summarizes the kind of overall student-athletes we had at North Medford this year," athletic director Mike Kay said. "It was a lot more than just the wins and losses." Grant High of Portland won the competition and Sheldon of Eugene was second. Among other teams in the Southern Oregon Conference, Ashland was 19th, Roseburg 24th, Klamath Union 28th, South Medford 31st, Grants Pass 51st and Crater 53rd. Eighty schools comprise the Class 4A ranks. In the 3A division, Phoenix finished 11th, while in the 2A division, St. Mary’s took ninth.
