UPDATE, 12:35 p.m.: Deputies exchanged gunfire with the Eagle Point man who barricaded himself in his mother's home for nine hours Tuesday before being apprehended, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office said in a media release this afternoon. Warren Alexander Rich, 33, fired rounds from the residence several times during the standoff, which began at about 4:15 p.m. Tuesday in the 1500 block of Worthington Road, the release said. "During the final instance, two JCSO deputies returned fire when Rich shot a rifle toward a deputy," it said. "Rich was not struck by gunfire and retreated into the residence." Deputies continued negotiations and at one point deployed tear gas in an attempt to get Rich to come out, the release said. At about 1:30 a.m., SWAT members entered the home and took Rich into custody. He was taken to Providence Medford Medical Center by Mercy Flights ambulance because of minor lacerations that "occurred prior to deputies entering the home," the release said. Rich is being held in the Jackson County Jail on charges of menacing, unlawful use of a weapon, and a no-bail hold for parole violation. Deputies who exchanged gunfire with Rich have been placed on paid administrative leave as is protocol in police shootings, the release said. Oregon State Police have taken over the investigation. The incident began when Rich's mother called 911 to report her son had threatened her with a rifle and was exhibiting "suicidal and homicidal behavior," the release said. She had fled the home before contacting police. 8 a.m.: A standoff with a reportedly suicidal man who barricaded himself inside a home just outside Eagle Point ended at 1:40 a.m. today, with the man in police custody, according to the Jackson County Sheriff's Department. Medford, Ashland, Eagle Point and Jackson County Fire District 3 provided assistance during the incident. It capped a standoff that lasted more than nine hours. The incident began Tuesday afternoon when the man, whose identity has not yet been released, allegedly pointed a gun at a woman and threatened her at a home in the 1500 block of Worthington Road. The woman was able to exit the residence and called 911 at 4:15 p.m. The sheriff's department responded and closed the intersection of Brophy and Worthington roads, where the man had barricaded himself inside the home. During the course of the standoff, the man reportedly fired shots while deputies and SWAT were on site. He had at least one handgun and a rifle, officials said. Medical personnel from the sheriff's department and Mercy Flights also responded to the scene, as did a crisis response expert from Jackson County Mental Health. Additional details about the original threats against the woman and the subsequent standoff were not immediately available. This story will be updated.
