Edwards, Newfield lead Challengers WHITE CITY -- Undefeated Cascade Christian received a dominating pitching performance from Bryan Edwards in the opener and Blaine Newfield provided the offensive spark in both games as the third-ranked Challengers swept a District 6 baseball doubleheader against Lost River at the V.A. Domiciliary Friday. Edwards struck out eight and didn't walk a batter in a 13-0 five-inning victory in the opener. Cascade then throttled Lost River 6-1 in the nightcap. Cascade Christian improved to 8-0 in District 6 and 17-0 overall. "We have good pitching and we're getting hits at the right time," Cascade Christian coach John Bruce said. "We're playing solid defense and we have excellent team speed, which bodes well on the bases and defensively." Blake McCormick's two-run single highlighted a five-run outburst in the first inning of Game No. 1. That was all Edwards needed as the senior right-hander upped his record to 8-0. "He stayed ahead of the hitters and had a terrific slider today," said Bruce. "That made for a good combination." Newfield had two doubles and two RBIs in the opener to go with three hits and one RBI in the second game. "We struggled hitting in the second game, but Blaine was one of the few bright spots," said Bruce. "He battled at the plate and sprayed the ball to all fields." MARY'S 3-6, BONANZA 1-7 -- At Bonanza, Brian Stout pitched a two-hit complete game with 10 strikeouts as St. Mary's registered its first District 6 victory in the opener. In the second game, the Crusaders (4-10, 1-5 Dist. 6) grabbed a 6-5 lead in the sixth inning on Stout's RBI double, but Levi Mortensen answered with a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame to propel the Antlers to the win. Brandon Frankel went 3-for-3 and Stout and Luke Tesdal each added two hits in the nightcap. Despite trailing 2-1 in Game 1, Bonanza pitcher Casey Norris took a no-hitter into the seventh inning. But Ryan Fetty singled and eventually scored on John Bergstrom's single as the Crusaders padded their lead with an insurance run. MARY'S 7-12, BONANZA 1-3 -- At Bonanza, junior catcher Shawna Jackson collected five hits in the twin bill and had a strong day behind the plate as St. Mary's improved to 4-2 in District 6 action. Lani Brophy (8-1) registered the victory with a complete game in the opener and pitched three shutout innings in the nightcap. Brophy's two-run double gave the Crusaders (13-3) an initial 2-0 lead in the first inning of Game 1. In the opener, St. Mary's scored what proved to be the winning runs in the sixth inning when Kim Hansen reached on an error, moved to third on Kelley Munro's double and scored on a single by Jackson. In the second game the Crusaders banged out 15 hits, with Jackson leading the effort with a 4-for-4, four-run, two-RBI performance. Jackson also threw out two base runners. The St. Mary's attack was bolstered by Shasta DeArmond (3-3, 4 runs), Sarah Fetty (3-3, 2 RBIs) and Brophy (2-3, 2 RBIs). First baseman DeArmond and second baseman Hansen came up with some big defensive plays on the right side of the infield as the Crusaders only made two errors in the doubleheader. Sophomore pitcher Laural Kelley completed the sweep with a six-hit shutout in the nightcap. Kelley improved to 8-1 with the six-strikeout, two-walk performance. She also helped her cause with a bunt single that scored two runs on a throwing error. Whitney Brookins sparked the Challengers attack with two hits in each game. Track ROSEBURG SWEEPS ASHLAND -- At Ashland, Roseburg's boys and girls teams posted almost identical wins over Ashland in a Southern Oregon Conference two-way meet Thursday. Conway Bixby won three events to lead the Roseburg boys to a 94-51 win, while the Indian girls defeated the Grizzlies 95-55.
