LOCAL ROUNDUP: Mustangs fall in tourney opener By Mail Tribune staff Updated: Jun 16, 2022 09:43 PM A A ROSEBURG — Fighting from behind for much of Thursday’s game, the Medford Mustangs couldn’t quite complete the comeback in a 3-2 loss to the Fairfield Expos to begin play at the Roseburg Father’s Day Tournament at Legion Field. The Mustangs (5-2), who trailed 3-0 after two innings, had the potential tying run in scoring position after Tanner Douglas’ two-out RBI double cut it to a one-run deficit. But the next batter, Owen Thompson, struck out looking against Fairfield relief pitcher Peyton Olds to end the game. Olds pitched the final 2 1/3 innings to pick up the save, allowing two hits and striking out four in relief of starting pitcher Grant Kerr. Kerr limited Medford to one run on five hits and struck out five in 4 2/3 innings. Mustangs pitcher Cameron Sewell was the tough-luck loser Thursday, allowing six hits and three runs while striking out six. The Expos used a three-run bottom of the second to build the early lead. Blake Kostal opened the scoring with a two-run triple to right field. Noah Rodda brought in the final run of the inning on an RBI single to shallow center. Aiden Horsley drove in the Mustangs’ first run of the game with an RBI single in the top of the fifth. Douglas finished 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Horsley was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Ryan Kariolich went 2-for-3 with a run scored for Fairfield. The Mustangs continue tournament play at 11 a.m. Friday morning against Bend Boss Baseball. FRESNO ATHLETICS 5, MEDFORD ROGUES 4: A Medford Rogues seventh-inning throwing error on an attempted back pick at third base allowed a pair of runs to score and gave the Fresno Athletics the win at Harry & David Field. The Rogues (6-5) had an 0-2 count with two outs in the seventh, but Blake Young’s wayward throw allowed Isaac Ochoa and Ryan Tiger — who both got on base via walks — to score and give the A’s a 5-3 lead. They got out of the inning on the very next pitch via a strikeout. Medford cut the deficit to 5-4 on a Young sacrifice fly to left field in the bottom of the eighth. The Rogues had the potential game-winning run in scoring position in the ninth, but the A’s were able to get the final two outs to preserve the win. Young went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run, while Drew Kaatz was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Kaatz’s RBI double in the bottom of the fourth allowed the Rogues to take an early 3-0 lead. Late Wednesday, the Rogues saw six pitchers combine to allow only two earned runs and seven hits overall to help keep the Redding Colt 45s at bay in a rare road game for Medford these days. Jack Erickson, Victor Quinn, Jacob Memmott and Jacob Liberta did not allow a run in a combined five innings of relief work, while David Grewe picked up the victory after giving up one run on two hits with two strikeouts. Overall, Rogues pitchers struck out 10 and walked six. Logan Drummond paced Medford’s offensive output by going 3-for-4 with one run scored and Tyler Peterson was 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
