PREP VOLLEYBALL Black Tornado bows out of playoffs NORTH BEND -- One win stood in the way of the North Medford volleyball team's shot at continuing its run into the state Class 4A playoff tournament. The Black Tornado downed Silverton without much of a challenge, 15-10, 15-8, and then met up with the host North Bend team just one hour later Monday night. North Bend held up its home-court advantage, however, with a 16-14, 13-15, 15-8 win over a tired North Medford team, eliminating the Black Tornado from postseason play. "It was tough playing games back-to-back like that," said North Medford coach Ron Beick. "The girls were disappointed but overall I think we played hard." The Bulldogs held a slim advantage in the first game before North Medford rallied back to even things up at 14. North Bend took advantage of two Black Tornado mistakes to steal the win. North Medford started sluggish in game 2, falling behind 10-1. "We lost our focus at the start of the second game," said Beick. "That first game was the one I thought we would be able to steal but it just didn't turn out for us." Jill Carrigan and Kendra Mitchell led a furious comeback for North Medford, as it rallied to take the second game. The Black Tornado trailed 10-8 in the decisive match before making a couple of errors and eventually running out of gas. Chaley Higgins led North Medford with 10 kills while Carrigan and Kara Hwang each had eight. Setter Kaci Maldonado had a team-high 34 assists. Hwang, Carrigan and Higgins paced the Black Tornado in their win over Silverton with six kills apiece. Hwang also had six digs as North Medford finished its season with an overall mark of 13-9. "We are disappointed with the loss," said Beick. "But we only lose one senior so we'll be back next season." ROSEBURG 15-7-15, MARSHFIELD 3-15-11 -- At Roseburg, Megan Morley and Carrie Gerretsen each had six kills in the first game for Roseburg in its Class 4A sub-tournament playoff win. The Indians continue their playoff run Wednesday at 7 p.m. when they travel to take on LaGrande. Despite missing on 19 serves, Roseburg split the first two games with Marshfield, who defeated Tigard in the night's first match, before taking the decisive third game. The Indians trailed 7-2 then rallied to 7-6 in game 3 when Randi Slone served points 7-11 to put Roseburg in the driver's seat. Morley and Gerretsen finished with 19 and 15 kills, respectively, for the Indians. Today's Sports Index Mail Tribune Copyright The Mail Tribune 1999, Medford, OR U.S.A.
